The cartel couldn’t understand why American demand stayed so high, or why cheap bromine kept turning up in its own markets. Some members accused each other of cheating on the price agreement. They cut the price again. Dow bought more. After four years, the Germans gave up and left the American market. A cartel tried to destroy an American chemist with cheap bromine. He turned them into his supplier.
