I have been reliably informed by my brother, Tim, that Cilla-mas has started early this year, courtesy of somebody posting her destruction of John Parr's seminal, You're the Voice, complete with a video featuring a Curly Watts lookalike on coasters. Kid's stuff! I shall raise thee her cover (more like a "smother", really), of Petr Ilya Tchaikovsky's uber noiseathon, the 1812 Overture! See the way the chap with the moustache looks at the girl, as if to say, "Fear not, child. It'll be over soon." Too late son. She's never coming back. Good morning.

A wayward pianist (Dudley Moore) receives an unexpected visit from the Music Police (Peter Cook). This sketch comes from Behind the Fridge, the stage show Peter Cook and Dudley Moore performed in the early 1970s in London's West End, on Broadway, and perhaps most successfully in Australia, where it was recorded for Channel 9 in Melbourne. The title was, of course, a playful nod to Beyond the Fringe. Sadly, the show effectively marked the end of their original partnership, although they reunited a few years later for the Broadway revue Good Evening, followed by Derek and Clive, which was an entirely different beast altogether! The sheer ingenuity of this sketch is astonishing. Weaving together the language of music, policing and motoring into something so consistently funny is an extraordinary piece of writing. While I can't say for certain, everything I've read suggests it was very much a collaborative effort between Cook and Moore. My God, it's good.

We begin Friday with a pastiche par excellence, courtesy of "The Prefab Four", The Rutles. I Must be in Love encapsulates the early Beatles material perfectly and is inordinately clever. I know that the great Eric was one of the people responsible for writing these wonderful tunes, but let's not forget the other, Neil Inness, whose reputation for being a good egg is only matched by his reputation for being a quiet genius. God bless Neil. Wooooooooooo!!!!

I came across this yesterday. It's a parody of old-school Welsh-language craft TV and features Robert Webb talking in a mix of English and invented Welsh (at least, I assume it's invented!) teaching “the wonderful art of padlock folding, or Padlockigami.” "Bethwelly fanny. Jam."

The great Paul Whitehouse is 68 years old today, which means I am obliged to post this (again!) - arguably the most majestically random but brilliant comedy sketch committed to celluloid for at least the last, what, forty, forty five years? Yes, forty, forty five years. Happy birthday Paul 🤘

This Two Ronnies sketch was never televised originally (it appeared many years later), but I’ve no idea why. It was written by Ronnie Barker, under the pseudonym Gerald Wiley, and for my money it gives Four Candles a run for it’s money. Seriously, if I’d written something this good I’d just retire immediately. What a talent! Good morning.

Divorced Dad was one of my favourite recurring characters in The Armstrong and Miller Show, and this is one of my favourite sketches. "After some of the things she's done to me in the bedroom, I couldn't take her into a church", truly is a line for the ages. Good morning.

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost's attempt to remake Star Wars, which was filmed while they were making the film, Paul, is a thing of beauty, IMVHO. Their go-to on-screen relationship that we've seen in so many films over the years always leaves me wanting more, and this is certainly no exception. Good day.
