Any serious theologian would push back on this sentiment. The Bible and theology doesn’t naturally point one towards modern American conservatism. Josh’s own established bias has made his theology lead that direction. He previously said that MAGA (and the Right) hasn’t co-opted Jesus for politic, and in the next breath, he is doing just that. Conflating “proper” theology and Bible knowledge to American conservatism. It’s utterly ridiculous. And if he had gone through with seminary, he would know how ridiculous this claim is. Can a Christian be a conservative? Absolutely. Can a Christian be a Democrat? Absolutely. Can the way they read and interpret Scripture help get them to that point? Yes. There is not one objective way to read and interpret the Bible. That is impossible to do since every human has their own bias and context when they study scripture. Does that mean that it’s wrong? No. Republicans and Democrats can understand Scripture differently yet share the same faith. It’s been this way for 2,000 years.

“The Aryan gave up the purity of his blood and, therefore, lost his sojourn in the paradise which he had made for himself. He became submerged in a racial mixture and gradually lost his cultural creativeness… the folkish state…must set race in the center of all life. It must take care to keep it pure… Thus, the highest purpose of a folkish state is a concern for the preservation of those original racial elements which bestow culture and create the beauty and dignity of a higher mankind.” – Adolf Hitler, 𝑀𝑒𝑖𝑛 𝐾𝑎𝑚𝑝𝑓 There is very little difference between the German nationalism that Hitler advocated for and Christian nationalism. Hitler was convinced Germany was stripped of its pure beauty because the Czechs, Pols, Slavs, and Jews were living in the, what Hitler believed, Aryan world. Christian nationalism believes that America is stripped of its beauty and culture because various nationalities make up the population. And, as Wolfe views it, has evicted the Western European white Protestant man from his place as “Native American,” who “founded, built, and died for” America. I’ll say it every time—Christian nationalism is just nationalism with a vague Christian aesthetic.

The NRSV is considered one of the most accurate English translations among several biblical scholars. It was made by an entire collection of Bible scholars and translators associated with the SBL. The National Council of Churches endorsed it. It does the best job at faithfully translating the original languages with what we have in English to remain as near to the source text. And yet, Josh Howerton is saying to burn it because it’s “woke.” This clip explains so much of Josh’s own Bible understanding, and sometime lack-there-of. If you’re calling the NRSV “woke” because it doesn’t affirm your culture war biases, you have completely lost the ropes.

It’s pretty bizarre to me that Howerton and gang really think the US has a 5-day work week because of the founding fathers recognizing both Saturday and Sunday as Sabbath days. When in reality it wasn’t standardized until fairly recently in the 1920s-1930s because of factory workers.

The fact that JP reads this verse and assumes it’s a metaphor for a vagina is truly wild. Proverbs 5 is just Solomon giving his son advise to remain faithful to his wife. To think of a cistern and assume it’s a description of a vagina simply because of an “opening” is childish.
