84 years ago today, Japanese dive-bombers single out the USS Enterprise during the Battle of the Eastern Solomons. ⚓️ High above the carrier, Aichi D3A "Val" bombers peeled out of the clouds, plunging straight toward the flight deck. On the Enterpise, Photographer’s Mate Marion Riley kept his camera rolling & captured the sheer terror as enemy bombs screamed toward the deck. 💣 Within minutes, 3 high explosive bombs ripped through the Enterprise, blowing holes in the steel deck, destroying gun mounts, & igniting chaotic blazes. 🔥 The attack killed 74 men & wounded 95 others. 🪦 Yet, amidst the smoke & twisted metal, the surviving crew went straight to work. They fought the infernos, patched the flight deck, & had the ship operational enough to recover her aircraft before nightfall. 💪🏼 The "Big E" survived the attack & went on to become the most decorated U.S. warship of World War II. 🇺🇸
