The dude that slips on his ass is still one of the funniest fucking things I’ve ever seen

I’ve always found Branagh’s Frankenstein considerably less than the sum of its parts (De Niro’s godfuckingawful in it), but the camerawork is SO dynamic and I think the Bride’s self-immolation is still the craziest fire stunt I’ve ever seen. How the fuck did they do this?

Peng-Yi Chang’s Demon Fighter/Night Orchid (1983) (it has more alternative titles than I think anyone knows what to do with) is a showcase of Taiwanese wuxia’s near miraculous ability to blend utter goddamn junk with genuine avant garde absurdity. LOOK at this stuff!!!!

Keita Amemiya’s Tekkōki Mikazuki (2000) is a tapestry of scraps, riffs, parodies, and bold re-envisionings of just about every Tokusatsu property under the sun. The Ultras, Kamen Riders, Super Sentai, kaiju, mecha. It’s all here, overstimulating as hell, and it’s a fucking ride.

Kenji Misumi’s Zatoichi Challenged (1967) isn’t quite the vicious thunderclap that precedes it, but it oozes style and mood, and rattles and shakes with easily the best kaiju-toned score Akira Ifukube contributed to the series. This shit is electrifying! This shit is excellent!!

The apocalyptic 9/11 of it all is pretty culturally evil, but it’s easily one of the scariest films ever confined to a PG-13 rating and the Martian tripods are pure nightmare given form. A triumph of special effects and disaster storytelling that hasn’t aged a day.
