When General Donahue commanded the 82nd Airborne Division, he made it a point to do physical training with a different squad every morning. He brought them to headquarters, where a certified instructor led everyone through a demanding high-intensity workout. He did it religiously for two years. I liked the idea so much that I brought the same approach into squadron command. Every morning, a different section would join me and the Command Sergeant Major for PT. It gave us a chance to sweat alongside our soldiers, spend time with every part of the formation, and build relationships that we wouldn’t have developed by staying behind our desks or working out by ourselves!
