BREAKING NEWS: The Justice Centre announces that it has delivered a national petition signed by 42,344 Canadians from every province and territory calling on Members of Parliament to defeat Bill C-22, the federal government’s proposed surveillance legislation. Justice Centre board member and constitutional historian Dr. John Robson formally presented the petition in Ottawa, warning that Bill C-22 would significantly expand state surveillance powers while undermining the privacy protections essential to a free society. “Privacy is not a luxury in a free society,” said Dr. Robson. “Privacy protects freedom of thought, freedom of expression, freedom of association, and the ability of ordinary Canadians to live without constant monitoring by the state.” Read the full story here: The Justice Centre is Canada’s leading civil liberties organization fighting for Charter rights and freedoms in the courts of law and in the court of public opinion. EXCLUSIVE VIDEO Lawyers for Saskatchewan trucker and businessman Chris Barber (Chris Barber (Big Red)) have filed a formal legal response opposing the Crown’s attempt to seize “Big Red,” the 2004 Kenworth long-haul truck he owns and relies on for his family’s trucking business. The Crown has applied to seize the truck as “offence-related property,” alleging it was used in connection to committing an offence. But Mr. Barber’s legal team argues the Ottawa police themselves directed him where to park his truck on Wellington Street and later approved “slow rolls” of the vehicle as a form of protest. In fact, the truck was moved out of the downtown core at the request of police on February 8, 2022, and never returned. VIDEO In this video update, constitutional lawyer James Manson, who is funded by the Justice Centre and represents peaceful Freedom Convoy protestors and donors, explains the significance of a motion seeking a permanent stay of proceedings in the $290 million class action lawsuit. The motion was brought after it was revealed that the plaintiffs’ lawyer failed to disclose a settlement agreement with one of the defendants for nearly two years, despite legal requirements that such agreements be disclosed immediately to all parties. Mr. Manson explains why this failure raises serious concerns about procedural fairness and the integrity of the legal process.
