Wanted: One Raccoon. Found: One Clingy Woodpecker. It’s National Animal Control Officer Appreciation Week, and our JCSO Animal Control Officers continue to prove that no two calls are ever the same. This one started as a reported raccoon but turned out to be a woodpecker who then hitched a ride and declared the responding officer its personal tree. After plenty of laughs, the woodpecker eventually moved along and found a more suitable tree of its own. We’re proud of our Animal Control Officers for handling every call with professionalism, patience, and a sense of humor, because in this line of work, even the wildlife likes to keep things interesting.

Coffee run. Stolen car. Stolen guns. Foot chase. Shed hideout. That was the path deputies followed after a man’s vehicle was stolen from a convenience store, along with his belongings and two guns inside the car. Using the victim’s tracking devices, along with assistance from Lakewood Police, phone and drone technology, and K9 Ultimo, deputies located 35-year-old Fidel Garfio hiding in a shed behind a home. Because Garfio may still have been armed, deputies surrounded the shed and gave him several chances to surrender. He refused. K9 Ultimo was deployed, and after the two met, Garfio quickly gave up. Garfio is being held on a $20,000 cash-only bond for a variety of charges - five of those are felonies including theft over $20,000, motor vehicle theft, and possession of a weapon by a previous offender. He was also wanted in two other counties for serious domestic violence crimes. K9 Ultimo usually gets the job done with his bark. In this case, his bite was, in fact, worse than his bark, and helped bring a dangerous situation to a safe end. Good boy, Ultimo!

Our deputies recently received a Flock hit on a stolen Chevy Silverado in the Evergreen area. The driver attempted to evade deputies by using side streets and back roads, but with the help of some well-placed stop sticks, we were able to slow the vehicle down after disabling multiple tires. A JSCO sergeant used the Grappler Police Bumper to safely bring the vehicle to a stop near Morrison Rd. and C-470. The driver made one last attempt to flee on foot, which also didn’t work. The suspect was eventually tased and taken into custody. The individual had an active warrant, was driving under restraint, and now faces charges for vehicular eluding, resisting arrest, aggravated motor vehicle theft, careless driving, and possession of a controlled substance. Great teamwork by all involved. It’s what we do.

Last week near Crown Hill Lake, our deputies showed exactly what it means to step up. They arrived to a grass fire and did not wait around for someone else to handle it. They jumped into action, grabbed fire extinguishers from their vehicles, and stopped the fire from spreading. West Metro Fire Rescue arrived shortly after and took over, and we are grateful for their fast response and expertise. But we are especially proud of our deputies for moving quickly, thinking clearly, and protecting our community in the moment that mattered. WestMetroFire

The family of Matthew Silverstone, the critically injured survivor of the Evergreen H.S. shooting, would like for the community to know more about their loved one. They have asked the JCSO to share their story through the beautiful words of Matthew’s uncle. The family’s GoFundMe account is in the link below.

Unimpressed Bobcat Ignores Lasers, Strolls Out of Ken Caryl Home on Its Own Terms Cats and dogs chase laser pointers, but this bobcat was not impressed. When it wandered into a Ken Caryl home and cozied up behind the TV, our deputies thought outside the box—trying their TASER’s green lasers to coax it out. The bobcat’s verdict? Not interested. It left at its own pace, right out the open back door. Guess some intruders just aren’t dazzled by our high-tech tricks. #TeamJCSO #Wildlife #Bobcat #Axon Axon

Last night, during the Red Flag Warning, JCSO deputies assisted Elk Creek Fire Department with a structure fire on Pleasant Park Road. Our deputies helped move hoses and used fire extinguishers and tools to put out hot spots. Strong winds can turn a small spark into a fast-moving fire. Please stay safe, follow current fire restrictions, and check on your neighbors. #cowx #cofire Elk Creek Fire

On April 28th, at 10:25 p.m., Jeffco deputies stopped a black Ford Explorer for speeding near I-70 and Harlan St. In addition to the stop, deputies conducted a narcotics investigation, asking for a K9 team to assist. K9 Anton confirmed their suspicion when he gave a positive alert for the odor of narcotics on the SUV’s rear hatch. (Good boy!) In total, 4.9 kilograms of fentanyl was found in the vehicle and seized. This equates to approximately 50,000 M30 pills at a street value of $1,000,000 dollars! We took the suspect into custody and turned him over to our federal partners. These drugs are no longer on the streets in Colorado! It’s what we do. #Fentanyl

Deer Drama Animal Control Officer Clark responded to a call near Parmalee Elementary School in Indian Hills after a young deer got itself stuck in a fence. The little one was wedged in tight and was making sure the whole neighborhood knew it. Translation of the loud protests: “Get me outta here!” Officer Clark, with a little help, carefully freed the deer, and mom was just around the corner. The two were reunited shortly afterward, and the fawn bounced right back to deer life, while the neighborhood enjoyed the sudden return of peace and quiet. Thanks to the caring neighbors who called it in. And to our outspoken young friend, we hear you loud and clear.

Who’s the Harebrained Culprit? Eighteen domestic rabbits were abandoned in cages by a dumpster at 15730 W 6th Ave Frontage Rd in Golden on May 10. That’s not a typo—18 rabbits, including two litters of babies (6 juveniles, 7 younger babies with their mom), a few adult females, and one adult male. This isn’t how responsible pet ownership works, and it’s illegal. Recognize these rabbits, or have a tip? Call 303-271-5070. We’re all ears. 🐰 #RabbitRescue #AnimalControl #Rabbits #AnimalWelfare

Cuteness Alert: Keep Your Distance from Baby Animals We get it. Baby animals are adorable. But here’s the thing: even if you spot a wobbly-legged elk calf parked just two feet off a busy trail, as we did at South Valley Park, resist the urge to play hero (or wildlife paparazzi). Elk mommas (cows) sometimes pick questionable parking spots for their calves, which means you might find one close to trails or even busy roads. Our Animal Control Officers recently had to temporarily close a trail and redirect hikers while mom made a dramatic comeback and moved her little one to a safer location. Stay sharp out there: • Be aware of your surroundings • Always leash your dog (your pup’s “curiosity” is not appreciated by local wildlife) • If you spot a baby deer or elk, don’t touch or move it • Keep your distance • Let rangers or animal control know so we can call in Colorado Parks and Wildlife, if needed. Thanks for helping us keep the wild in wildlife in Jeffco. Baby elk send their silent thanks (and maybe a little side-eye). Deputy brings comfort to a birthday girl involved in a car crash 🚔 A large accident involving many vehicles shut down eastbound I-70 at Genesee yesterday morning. Among those involved was a young girl on a very special day—her 9th birthday. Deputy Evans first helped the birthday girl get safely out of their vehicle through a rolled down window. Then he brought her and her sister a little comfort, he gave them each a Deputy Hugs bear— one of the special stuffed animals deputies and victim advocates carry to help victims during difficult moments. Then he gave the birthday girl a few extra gifts. 🧸 For more information on the Deputy Hugs program: Even in tough times, small acts of kindness can make a big difference. We’re glad they’re both safe, and grateful for all of our first responders. Stay safe out there! 🚔 It’s what we do. #DeputyHugs #KindnessMatters #StaySafe #VictimAdvocate

Deer in Distress: Tangled Tale Ends in Rescue Colorado Parks and Wildlife and our JCSO deputies teamed up for a wild rescue mission! A curious deer got itself tangled in a backyard hammock in the Applewood community, and it was up to this amazing team to set it free. While the CPW Officer bravely held the deer steady, our deputies used knives to quickly cut through the hammock ropes and free this distressed visitor. The deer didn’t completely understand we were there to help but was grateful to be set free. This is a great reminder to secure or store outdoor items like hammocks and sporting nets when not in use, to help protect our wildlife neighbors. Helping our neighbors in distress. It’s what we do. #WildlifeRescue #Teamwork #LivingWithWildlife #JCSO CPW NE Region Colorado Parks and Wildlife
