Effective at 8 a.m. today, Wednesday, June 5, 2024, Jefferson County Sheriff Reggie Marinelli, in conjunction with the Golden Police Department, will limit waterway activities on Clear Creek. These temporary restrictions extend from the western boundary of unincorporated Jefferson County through the eastern limits of the City of Golden, including Vanover Park. Water activities prohibited by the order include all single-chambered air inflated devices such as belly boats, inner tubes and single chambered rafts, as well as body surfing and swimming. Kayaks, whitewater canoes and multi-chambered professionally guided rafts, and river boards are exempt but are encouraged to observe extreme caution due to the safety concerns surrounding swift moving water and floating debris. All of the above authorized users and occupants must have the use of a Type I, Type III, or Type V Coast Guard-approved flotation vests and helmets designed for water use. The reasoning for this decision is as follows: • Clear Creek is a known Type IV water area, which increases public risk due to water temperature, blasted rock, undercut rocks, potential strainers, and other safety considerations. • Water height and flows are expected to rise as the heavy snowpack continues to melt in the coming days. Violators may be issued a summons for a class 2 petty offense, punishable by a fine of up to $100. These restrictions will be strictly enforced in an effort to minimize the risk to those using the waterway. These temporary water restrictions will remain in effect until water levels decrease.

Great news – we have the person suspected of starting this fire on July 1st on Meyers Gulch Road in custody! Evidence at the scene of the fire ultimately linked 61-year-old Richard Berkey to the uninhabited address, where he was apparently living in the garage without permission from the owner. Our search for Mr. Berkey didn’t take long. Turns out he was taken into custody a few days after the incident and was being held at our detention facility on unrelated warrants out of Arapahoe and Adams counties. Jeffco Investigators are charging him with two felonies – 4th degree arson - recklessly starts a fire; and firing woods or prairie during fire restrictions. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of tampering with a utility meter. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

This could have been much worse. Last night around 8:20 p.m., JCSO deputies responded to a reported fire on Meyers Gulch Road. Multiple callers reported smoke and flames, with flames reaching approximately 20 feet. When deputies arrived, they found a shed on fire very close to a home. Deputies confirmed no one was inside the home, then used fire extinguishers and dirt to slow the fire and keep it from spreading to the house until Evergreen Fire arrived. Evergreen Fire took over and fully extinguished the fire. The cause remains under investigation. Thank you to the residents who called this in quickly, our deputies who acted fast, and Evergreen Fire for getting this fire out before it became something far worse. Evergreen Fire/Rescue

This one started as a reported raccoon but turned out to be a woodpecker who then hitched a ride and declared the responding officer its personal tree. After plenty of laughs, the woodpecker eventually moved along and found a more suitable tree of its own. We’re proud of our Animal Control Officers for handling every call with professionalism, patience, and a sense of humor, because in this line of work, even the wildlife likes to keep things interesting.

Our deputies recently received a Flock hit on a stolen Chevy Silverado in the Evergreen area. The driver attempted to evade deputies by using side streets and back roads, but with the help of some well-placed stop sticks, we were able to slow the vehicle down after disabling multiple tires. A JSCO sergeant used the Grappler Police Bumper to safely bring the vehicle to a stop near Morrison Rd. and C-470. The driver made one last attempt to flee on foot, which also didn’t work. The suspect was eventually tased and taken into custody. The individual had an active warrant, was driving under restraint, and now faces charges for vehicular eluding, resisting arrest, aggravated motor vehicle theft, careless driving, and possession of a controlled substance. Great teamwork by all involved. It’s what we do.

That was the path deputies followed after a man’s vehicle was stolen from a convenience store, along with his belongings and two guns inside the car. Using the victim’s tracking devices, along with assistance from Lakewood Police, phone and drone technology, and K9 Ultimo, deputies located 35-year-old Fidel Garfio hiding in a shed behind a home. Because Garfio may still have been armed, deputies surrounded the shed and gave him several chances to surrender. He refused. K9 Ultimo was deployed, and after the two met, Garfio quickly gave up. On April 28th, at 10:25 p.m., Jeffco deputies stopped a black Ford Explorer for speeding near I-70 and Harlan St. In addition to the stop, deputies conducted a narcotics investigation, asking for a K9 team to assist. K9 Anton confirmed their suspicion when he gave a positive alert for the odor of narcotics on the SUV’s rear hatch. (Good boy!) In total, 4.9 kilograms of fentanyl was found in the vehicle and seized. This equates to approximately 50,000 M30 pills at a street value of $1,000,000 dollars! We took the suspect into custody and turned him over to our federal partners. These drugs are no longer on the streets in Colorado! It’s what we do. #Fentanyl

The little one was wedged in tight and was making sure the whole neighborhood knew it.
