I told my daughter she had to pay $400 a month to live at home after college. She thought I was being hard on her. Paid it every month without complaint. Never missed once. Two years later she moved out. I handed her an envelope. $9,600. Every dollar she ever paid me. Plus a little extra. She cried. I told her that was her security deposit, first month, and emergency fund. She thought I was punishing her. I was preparing her. She’s a very happy young woman.

My mom had a heart attack last year. Ambulance: $8,400. ER visit: $42,000. Insurance covered: $11,000. She owed: $39,400. She has insurance. Has had it for 30 years. Never missed a payment. She’s 68 years old negotiating a payment plan. This isn’t a glitch. This is how the American healthcare system works

boomer dad: “you should never discuss salary with coworkers.” me: “i compared pay with someone on my team.” boomer dad: “that’s unprofessional.” me: “he was making $15k more than me with the same title and workload.” boomer dad: “that’s between the employee and the company.” me: “i used the information to renegotiate my pay.” boomer dad: “you just got lucky.” me: “no. i got informed.” a few weeks later i was making thousands more a year. keeping salaries secret rarely protects workers. it usually protects companies.

A 22 year old with a full time job should be able to afford rent. Should be able to buy groceries without doing math at the register. Should be able to get sick without going into debt. Should be able to own a car without a cosigner. Should be able to save $200 a month without it feeling heroic. None of that is ambitious. None of that is asking for much. That used to just be called having a job.
