30 years ago, Who Will Save Your Soul came out as a CD single. Felt like a good day to share this memory—my first ever TV performance, on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. Just me, a guitar, and a song I’d written at 16 while hitchhiking through Mexico. Forever grateful to Conan and the other late night shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live who really do help break young artists careers!

Elon Musk Sound of Freedom | Movie It saddens me that some media is trying to politicize this movie. This is not left or right. It’s about millions of kids being trafficked, and no matter what your faith or creed, we need to protect all the vulnerable kids rather than fight over philosophical differences.

#Foolishgames was written when I was 18 or so. I was trying to conjure the same cinematic angst as Leonard Cohens The Famous Blue Raincoat. I was also heavily influenced by Pablo Neruda and his use of color and texture.I will release the second half of the song next! The song was too long for socials!

Here is the second half of foolish games. For those new here, I thought I’d sing the entire album Pieces Of You in order. This is song 4. You can hear the prior ones by checking out my page. I really need to practice Painters, Adrian and Amen. Lordy those are long ones too! What songs are you looking forward to the most?

Song 2 of me singing the entire PIECES IF YOU ALBUM in order If you like this series - pls interact w the videos cause they are longer and the algorithm will suppress them otherwise I wrote “Pieces of You” when I was 18. To help me hold up a mirror to prejudice. The song intentionally uses harsh language—sexism, homophobia, antisemitism, bullying—because I wanted listeners to hear the kinds of things people actually say to each other, and to confront how fear and judgment get projected onto others. At the heart of the song is a question I was wrestling with: Why do we sometimes hate people who reflect parts of ourselves? Why do we reject in others the very pieces of ourselves we haven’t learned to accept or understand yet.

Growing up is not the absence of dreaming. It’s being able to understand the difference between the ones you can hold and the ones that you’ve been sold. Celebrating 20 years of Goodbye Alice in Wonderland 🤍 Thank you for walking through this album with me, chapter by chapter, lyric by lyric. I made a few special pieces to celebrate—now in my merch store. Stream the album: Shop the merch:

This song that changed my life! Written with Steve Poltz - that’s him in the video. Directed by Lawrence Caroll... Losing a love can feel like shedding a skin - and that’s how the image of slipping out of the dress came into being. This simple song went on to break records - and has been a gift to me every day since writing it. Fun fact - did you know that is Flea playing bass on the album? Adore him…

Song #9 I’M SENSITIVE. I’m singing the entire album in order. If you like a song and don’t see it- check out my feed. One of my favorite things in my career is that my fan group called themselves the Everyday Angels based on this song - what a wonderful song to rally around. 🥹 😇

How cute is this video?! I met Steve Poltz when I was 18 years old, I was a barista in a coffee shop called Java Joes, and he was singing. He got me up to improvise on a blues song and it was the beginning of a life long friendship and artistic collaboration. We wrote “You Were Meant For Me” together! He is in that video :) I adore Poltzie…he’s funny, smart, and the best of pals. Happy Birthday Steve! If you have not seen him live or checked out his albums - you need to!

Have a special treat for you! Here's an alternate view of me at Woodstock '99, which was 26 years ago today. The whole set at this festival is ubiquitously available online and has been bootlegged to death, but THIS is alternate B-roll footage that we shot that day from stage left, that NOBODY has seen before and features Alan Bershaw’s multitrack mix of the audio. I went on between Elvis Costello and Red Hot Chili Peppers on the final day, shortly before it literally went down in flames. Watch the full video now on my YouTube channel:

I was 18 when I wrote Foolish Games. It was heavily influenced by the writing of Pablo Neruda and Leonard Cohen. I wanted to write lyrics that you could see in your head- like stepping into a movie. For the video, I worked with long-time collaborator Matthew Rolston- and drew from imagery that had to do with being bridled, owned, tamed, and a desire to be free of the constraints of the male gaze. Did this song resonate with you?

Today is the anniversary of my sophomore album Spirit. My first album was so successful that the pressure to follow it up was immense. Every interview I did, the journalist would high light this, and tell me all about the ‘sophomore slump’. I had never meant to write ‘hits’. I just wrote songs as medicine for myself, and they turned out to be hits. Massive hits 🤷♀️ . In fact ‘you were meant for me’ went on to be the longest running single in HISTORY. Crazy.
