California politicians just moved AB 1421 through the Assembly — a bill that orders the state to build a mileage tax system by 2027. Not "study." Not "explore." Implement. That means tracking every mile you drive — then taxing you for it. On top of gas taxes. On top of registration fees. On top of sales taxes. On top of local transportation taxes. This is a commuter punishment aimed straight at working families who drive to work, drive their kids to school, and drive to pick up groceries. Sound familiar? SANDAG tried this exact scheme right here in San Diego County. Residents found out. Commuters spoke up. Small businesses pushed back. They backed down. We stopped it once. We'll stop it again.

A violent criminal ran from law enforcement onto a school campus during morning drop-off. The principal opened the door. No ID check. No questions. Let him leave and come back. His record: assault with a deadly weapon, DUI, domestic violence restraining order. Hundreds of kids were in that building. This was not compassion. This was a political decision that put children at risk. Every parent in San Diego should be asking why a school administrator chose to obstruct law enforcement and gamble with their kids' safety. Our children deserve adults who protect them, not adults who use them to make a political statement.

Just a week ago, we were notified that Mexico was preparing to release millions of gallons of sewage into our region. Thanks to public pressure, awareness, and advocacy—Mexico is now redirecting that sewage to their own treatment plant instead of dumping it into the U.S. We are cautious, but this could be a huge win for our communities, our coastline, and our environment. It proves that when we raise our voices, we can protect what matters. Let’s keep up the fight for clean water and accountability!

During my recent border visit, I encountered an abandoned campsite filled with tents, food, drinks, and campfires paid for by the San Diego County taxpayers. The site is used as a temporary holding site before migrants are then processed into our country. There wasn't a person in sight, but items were scattered throughout the area.

My colleagues just raided $300M from emergency reserves — money set aside to keep people safe for 60 days after an earthquake, tsunami, or fire. The very first thing they did? Gave employees a $45M bonus out of those reserves. If you have to dig into emergency funds to pay bonuses while infrastructure crumbles around you, something is deeply wrong. The short-term game: spend, spend, spend. The long-term "fix": taxes, taxes, and more taxes. We need leaders who prioritize the basics — not raid the safety net.

While San Diego families were losing loved ones to fentanyl, a county-funded nonprofit executive was allegedly spending their tax dollars on plastic surgery and trips to Hawaii. The DA announced six felony charges against the former COO of the Harm Reduction Coalition of San Diego. More than $130,000 in public funds meant for Narcan distribution was allegedly stolen for personal luxuries. What's worse: the County's own audit flagged problems. A background check revealed a prior conviction for stealing over $500,000 from a previous employer. They awarded a second contract anyway. This information was kept from me. I've called for a public presentation on the County's fraud prevention safeguards and greater spending transparency. And before anyone asks San Diego families for a single dollar more through a proposed half-cent sales tax — government needs to prove it can be trusted with the dollars it already has.

That means $40 million in “bonuses” pulled straight from funds meant to repair air conditioning in public buildings, maintain Sheriff’s vehicles, and support mental health services. Today, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors failed to take action to repeal its reckless super sanctuary policy, which keeps convicted criminals in our communities instead of being deported. This policy protects criminals—including rapists, child abusers, burglars, and violent offenders—who are in this country illegally. Just now, I brought forward a commonsense measure to support the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act—ensuring males, however they identify, do not compete in women’s sports. My colleagues refused to support it. Women’s sports exist to provide a fair and safe playing field. Yet girls are being injured, teams are forfeiting, and parents in San Diego County are deeply concerned about their daughters sharing locker rooms with biological males. Unfortunately, my colleagues would not support this measure. This isn’t about politics—it’s about fairness, safety, and common sense. Women and girls deserve better, and I will keep fighting for them.

Tomorrow, I will be bringing forward an item to remove the County of San Diego’s dangerous “super sanctuary” status. The original author of this policy has since resigned, and now it’s time to correct a reckless mistake that puts politics over public safety. Just as a recap, we are talking about individuals who have been convicted of serious crimes—rapists, child abusers, burglars, and violent offenders. These are people who have been arrested, gone through the justice system, and are sitting in jail. And yet, under the current policy, these criminals are being released back onto our streets instead of being deported. We are now shielding dangerous criminals—at the direct expense of public safety. Starting in October, SDG&E will hit every customer with a new $24 monthly “Base Services Charge” — that’s an extra $288 a year, no matter how much or how little power you use. This so-called “reshuffling” is nothing more than a utility tax. It punishes seniors on fixed incomes, working families, and even those who invested in solar to cut costs — all while SDG&E made nearly $900 million in profits last year. Californians already pay the second-highest energy rates in the nation. Enough is enough.
