But there’s another side to this story. Recreation on Lake Powell is still alive and well. Boaters, kayakers and families are still exploring a massive reservoir where deep water remains across much of the lake. And as the water retreats, portions of Glen Canyon that have been submerged for decades are emerging again, revealing landscapes few people have had the chance to see. It’s a double-edged sword: a shrinking reservoir with major consequences for the West, while also uncovering a remarkable natural landscape and remaining one of the region’s great places to get out on the water. We explored both sides of the story for The Weather Channel

This storm is measured in feet, not inches: Higher elevations of the High Sierra: 6+ feet Donner Pass (7,056 ft): 5 to 6 feet Soda Springs (6,752 ft): 4 to 5 feet Truckee: 2 to 4 feet That’s just over a 1,200-foot climb up I-80, and it nearly doubles the snow totals from town to the summit. Water rescues are ongoing this morning in Anderson, Indiana, after extraordinary rainfall sent water into streets, neighborhoods and homes. And the concern is now shifting to the White River. As of 5:30 a.m. EDT Thursday, the White River at Anderson was at 17.9 feet and rising. Flood stage is 10 feet. The latest National Weather Service forecast calls for the river to crest near 23 feet this evening, reaching major flood stage and approaching the flood of record. A massive firefighting operation is underway this morning outside Reno. Hundreds of firefighters are being briefed, organized and deployed to battle the #HawkFire, which has burned thousands of acres around Peavine Mountain and threatened communities across northwest Reno and the North Valleys. The latest official incident update lists 0% containment, with tens of thousands of residents in evacuation or evacuation-warning zones. Homes and other structures have burned, with damage assessments still underway. The fire is confirmed human-caused, though exactly how it started remains under investigation. This is what firefighters are up against outside Reno. The vegetation around the #HawkFire is so dry you can pick it up and pulverize it in your hands. Add low humidity and increasing afternoon winds, and you have conditions primed for wildfire growth. The National Weather Service expects humidity to fall sharply this afternoon as southwest winds increase, with gusts potentially reaching 20–25 mph. Officials continue to report 0% containment, with hundreds of firefighters and additional resources working the fire. This dry brush tells the story. It doesn’t take much for fire to find fuel here. We’re outside Reno with continuing coverage on The Weather Channel.

Avalanche mitigation near Castle Peak. A helicopter is using a suspended firefighting-style water bucket as a mechanical trigger, knocking down unstable cornices to intentionally release snow under controlled conditions. Cornices are one of the most common natural avalanche triggers. If they collapse without warning, they can send large slabs down the slope. Bringing them down on purpose allows crews to control the timing, stabilize the terrain, and create a safer path for recovery teams. No explosives, just highly precise long-line flying in a very small safety window.
