" I was looking for money for beer, we were broke, I and my best friend Wunmi we were serving and just wanted to go drink and smoke weed. "They said there was an audition going on down the street. I walked in there and froze. I froze because I thought this was a walk in the park...." — Jim Iyke

A beautiful thing happened after the Wizkid concert in Algeria while I was enjoying a smoke. After performing for over 40 minutes, Wizkid left the hall to a waiting car, flanked by security guards, and lots of people trying to get his attention for photos. After security got him into the car, a little girl was outside crying for a photo. Wizkid stopped his entire protocol, came down took a photo and did a video with the girl, and just the girl. And got back into the car. When he left, I asked the girl what that meant to her, and she couldn't speak. Just hopping, skipping and dancing. Immense joy written all over her face. It made me feel warm for her. Thanks Wizkid, for being a correct guy.

Running through music Friday and stands out that our music continues to reflect our current harsh societal conditions, we’ll begin to see an uptick in depth and introspection. Showing up as wanton self-reflection or the rise of prayer, there’s a natural progression towards manifold forms of coping, upping hustle, and protection of self. This week’s standout entrant is G4ZI’s “Energy,’ featuring Kizz Daniel, where hustle and prayer sit side-by-side. Aided by plucky strings, and lyrical mastery, everything here pierces deep. Also, shouts to Kizz Daniel for being on this record. Apart from elevating it, it’s just to see these sort of collaborations happen. 🔥🔥🔥

EXCEL JOAB: “We are horrible businessmen in this country, especially in this music industry. We are horrible businessmen. It’s almost like we don’t think. We just want to do what the next person is doing. "And it’s like what also works here is vanity metrics. It works. That’s the reason why farming happens. People farm, get their number one screenshot, post it. But okay, but by December when everybody is doing shows, you can’t even sell out Muri Okunola Park. So what is the point of this? This is not sustainable. Why do we love vanity metrics so much? We are horrible businessmen, Joey. Horrible, especially in the music industry.”
