If Democrats win control of the U.S. House, as I’ve long predicted they will, they’ll have an opportunity to advance policy ideas that can help many Americans. And if they approach it the right way, they can bring some Republicans along and build bipartisan support. For example, Congress reclaiming its power from the executive branch is a no-brainer that should draw broad bipartisan support.

It really shouldn't be that difficult to strike a deal between Republicans and Democrats to reopen our government. Compromise isn't a dirty word. As elected leaders, it's what you're expected to do. The voters will reward you. What I'd say to each of them is: Republicans: You've already said you're willing to work on the Obamacare subsidies, just do it now to get a deal done. Democrats: Focus on securing a solution for the subsidies and debate the larger agenda issues during the midterm elections next year.

Most Americans agree that those here illegally who commit crimes should be removed. But going beyond that to break up families who are working hard, paying taxes, and contributing to their communities isn’t where the country stands. What we need more of today is empathy and understanding.

This election proved again that democracy works and voters know how to course correct. People are frustrated with rising costs and they’ve had it with mean politics. They want leaders who solve real problems like affordability and bringing the country back toward the middle.

Democratic Socialists are winning elections because they are speaking directly to voters about their very real concerns and offering ideas to address them. Those may not be ideas I agree with - or even believe are workable - but when other candidates fail to offer ideas and proposals of their own, it is no wonder they are losing.

We’re drifting toward a dangerous idea: that might makes right. We’ve seen this before. When the strong dominate the weak, whether in a town or on the world stage, it may look powerful at first, but over time it drags everyone down. We tried the law of the jungle in the last century, and it gave us world wars and devastating loss. America was founded to lead by example, not by intimidation. Right is right. And how we use our strength will determine whether others see us as a partner or a threat.

I’ve long wondered why there isn’t a serious effort in Congress to build a governing coalition of Republicans and Democrats. Too many members treat each other as enemies without ever trying to work together. Our system wasn’t built for one-party rule that swings with each election. That approach has stalled real reform and put our future at risk.

Shutting out foreign students from Harvard University, the best university in the world, is a huge mistake. We lose their brainpower and the way they challenge and inspire our own students. Many return home as leaders with a deeper understanding of America. That benefits all of us.
