IMO: shoelaces on the mat to “slide back” is bad leg attack defense. It creates zero pressure and the wrestler has an easier time driving up when extended.

Making your opponent think “this is harder than I expected” imo is the best way to upset someone who is favorited to win. Creating stress mid match for someone is a skillset.

Coaches: stop saying “That won’t work against somebody good”. Why take options off the table in such a creative sport? Allow wrestlers to understand their style and what is high percentage for THEM. Basic skills matter but allow your unconventional wrestlers to be unconventional.

As a kid I struggled with nerves before a lot of matches. I used to catch myself wanting the easiest route possible for a win. This lead me to start overvaluing the win, which lead me to being scared to lose. Be excited for the actual wrestling, and good things happen.

Wrestling is not: can I wrestle their best position better than them. Wrestling is: can I get to where I’m good better than they can get to where they’re good. Rerouting the wrestling back to the pockets you excel in is key, rather than trying to outwrestle them at their game.
