Here is a female Ivy Bee (Colletes hederae) trying to collect ivy nectar and pollen but being bombarded by males wanting to mate with her. She seems pretty good at kicking them away and carrying on!

Somehow I had never seen a bumblebee pollinate a passionflower before! 🐝 Look how much pollen collects on her back as she drinks the nectar: the gap in the flower that she’s moving through looks perfectly tailored to the body of a large bee. You can imagine that a smaller thing like a honeybee might visit to drink the nectar without actually catching any pollen and therefore would not be an effective pollinator of this plant.

Ajax fell asleep on my leg while I was working. 💤 He used to do this a lot when he was younger and would get so tired he’d just slump forward, but he hasn’t done it as much recently. Normally now he tucks his head neatly under his wing to go to sleep. He must have tired himself out with all the running around the garden this afternoon!

Sometimes we can lose sight of the beauty in common things so here’s a reminder that magpies are just as spectacular as any tropical bird-of-paradise. Ajax’s first feathers didn’t form properly because of the malnourishment he experienced before his rescue. Since then, he has been working hard to grow a new set. Aren’t they amazing?

The contrast between the old video of Ajax trying to catch a mite vs. How expertly he catches insects now 🥹 I don’t hand feed him at all anymore. It’s part of the process of getting him to be as independent as possible and not associating humans with food. He independently forages in the garden and surrounding area, but I do supplement this by scattering cat biscuits and mealworms outside. I also get him boxes of live crickets or earthworms as an extra fun treat, but I don’t give them to him directly. I just leave them for him to find. 🦗

With hindsight this was actually a completely predictable outcome of wearing big shiny earrings while fostering a baby magpie. I might need to tone down my jewellery while he is around!

Have you ever seen a water stick insect? It’s an aquatic predatory bug; basically a praying mantis that lives underwater. This species is the only one found in the UK: the Eurasian Water Stick Insect (Ranatra linearis).

I gave Ajax this ball and in exchange he gave me one of my gel earplugs that has been missing for a week that he *somehow* knew was hidden in that specific plant pot under that particular leaf.

Undoubtedly one of the proudest achievements of my life is building a pond that is deemed high enough quality that a creature as stunningly beautiful, majestic, and ancient as this dragonfly would choose to leave her eggs here.

In the name of oversharing, I am having an incredibly stressful day, sleep deprived after days of a heat wave, battling to save the local habitat for wildlife, and also being bombarded by critical comments and emails about my apparently irresponsible and grossly inappropriate handling of bird over which someone is now threatening to prosecute me under the Animal Welfare Act. Meanwhile, the bird in question is outside, blissfully unaware, and squeaking happily to himself while he wrestles with a worm.

Look what I saw in the garden last night! The small resident hedgehog (Henrietta) was joined by a second, much larger visitor, and it was the biggest hedgehog I have ever seen in my life! I’m not sure she was very happy about his visit?

Ajax would like me to inform everyone that he has become Ajax; the Destroyer of Worms. He has also started exploring much further afield. One evening this week I went out looking for him because he had been gone a while. I eventually found him at the local pub (this is true I promise) with his new group of friends including the pub staff, who told me that they adore him and vow to protect him.

Ajax has been outside all day enjoying the sun, but he just came in to have a bath in the shrimp jar. There’s plenty of places for him to bathe outside, but for some reason he specifically likes this 🙄
