Ajax fell asleep on my leg while I was working. 💤 He used to do this a lot when he was younger and would get so tired he’d just slump forward, but he hasn’t done it as much recently. Normally now he tucks his head neatly under his wing to go to sleep. He must have tired himself out with all the running around the garden this afternoon!

The contrast between the old video of Ajax trying to catch a mite vs. How expertly he catches insects now 🥹 I don’t hand feed him at all anymore. It’s part of the process of getting him to be as independent as possible and not associating humans with food. He independently forages in the garden and surrounding area, but I do supplement this by scattering cat biscuits and mealworms outside. I also get him boxes of live crickets or earthworms as an extra fun treat, but I don’t give them to him directly. I just leave them for him to find. 🦗

A Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui) laying her eggs on a thistle. This butterfly migrates from Africa all the way up to the Arctic Circle, passing through the UK on its way. Their migration is a ~9,000 mile round trip, making it twice as long as the famous American migration of the Monarch butterfly. However, this epic journey is not completed by any single individual, and is an endeavour that spans several generations. The Painted Ladies returning to Africa in the autumn are several generations removed from their ancestors who left Africa earlier that same year.

We spent the morning sitting in the garden doing some birdwatching. ☀️ We saw two great spotted woodpeckers, a blue tit feeding her chicks in the tree, and a pair of wood pigeons mating. Ajax is learning a lot!

In the name of oversharing, I am having an incredibly stressful day, sleep deprived after days of a heat wave, battling to save the local habitat for wildlife, and also being bombarded by critical comments and emails about my apparently irresponsible and grossly inappropriate handling of bird over which someone is now threatening to prosecute me under the Animal Welfare Act. Meanwhile, the bird in question is outside, blissfully unaware, and squeaking happily to himself while he wrestles with a worm.

Ajax would like me to inform everyone that he has become Ajax; the Destroyer of Worms. He has also started exploring much further afield. One evening this week I went out looking for him because he had been gone a while. I eventually found him at the local pub (this is true I promise) with his new group of friends including the pub staff, who told me that they adore him and vow to protect him.
