Today’s reading from Luke 6:27-38 reminded me of a story that we haven’t told since it happened 2 years ago: We received a particularly angry email from a reader who did not like how we ended Volume 8. Specifically, his complaint was that no sane individual, when faced with running back to save the person who threatened his / her life, would do so— “he should have let her die,” to paraphrase his critique. The messaging of our work, while not meant to be profound or deep, is designed with pathos baked into the recipe: to explore heroic virtue in contexts seldom seen. We specifically wanted to have a character live up to one of Christianity’s hardest tenets because it is a difficult practice in the post-modern world obsessed with merciless, unforgiving, ostracizing behavior. While it can be disheartening to see a reader leave, it is not discouraging to us when we feel that we meta-textually presented a moral dilemma that forces one of our protagonists to make a choice consistent with his character— and one which the reader will either reject or affirm. We always hope our characters, though fictional, can serve as small examples of how we can strive to be better.
