Bad actors billed Medicare billions by slapping the most expensive skin grafts on elderly and dying patients who didn't need them. "The doctors who prescribed them would get 6% of the sales cost. And so, they were incentivized to prescribe more expensive products. In Europe, they spend 35 cents a cubic inch. We were spending $135, and that went up to $2,000 a cubic inch." "So 2019, we were paying $200 million. Last year we spent 14 billion. All stolen. It's all stolen. And we were on track to spend 23 billion this year." "We put an end to it, and we now have driven that cost down to somewhere around a billion dollars." In one Arizona case, the owners of two wound care companies pleaded guilty to more than $1.2 billion in fraudulent claims. Medicare paid over $1 million per patient for grafts slapped on elderly patients who didn't need them, many of them dying in hospice. In June, DOJ charged 11 more defendants over more than $2 billion in allograft claims, including a company accused of issuing sham invoices to inflate what Medicare paid. It feels like every week I learn a new way people were ripping off taxpayers for billions.

🚨NEW: A Hawaiian man knocked out a Democratic congressional candidate with one punch after he allegedly threatened to shoot a woman at a Maui beach. Police say Kirill Basin, 40, became enraged after a 61-year-old man asked him to lower his music. Basin allegedly threatened to shoot the man’s wife and several bystanders. A local man seen approaching in the background confronted Basin, knocked him out, then calmly told him to stop threatening people. Police say Basin later pulled a knife and continued threatening people. When officers arrived, he allegedly threw the knife into the ocean. The same bystander swam out, recovered the knife, and handed it to police. Basin was charged with two counts of first-degree terroristic threatening. Bail was set at $1 million. Police say he has also been arrested in other assault and property-damage cases since May, and several people have obtained temporary restraining orders against him. Sounds like another successful day connecting with voters on the campaign trail!

One of the most heartbreaking courtroom moments I've ever watched. Former "American Idol" contestant and music pastor Caleb Flynn sobs as letters from his 10- and 12-year-old daughters are read at his sentencing for murdering their mother, Ashley. "Dear Daddy, I don't even know where to start. How could you do such a thing? I looked up to you. I loved you with all my heart." She calls her mom her "best friend" and "the perfect person," and says she misses her "so, so, so much." "You chose to kill the only mother I've ever had." His other daughter didn't call him Daddy. "Dear Caleb." "Did you even think about how much pain you would bring your own two daughters?" "You had the best life ever, and you decided to throw it away forever for a girl who was half your age." "And by the way, I don't plan on coming to see you." Both girls begged him to confess. Earlier, Flynn told the court: "I did not kill my wife." He was sentenced to life without parole. The jury didn't believe him. Neither do his daughters.
