The rhetoric over these last few weeks has been abhorrent. New York City is home to the largest Jewish population outside of NYC. You are members of our family, our coworkers, our friends and our neighbors. It should go without saying, but we condemn anti-semitism, Hamas, and all attacks against our Jewish brethren. In times of strife, memories are sometimes short, so let’s remember who our city leaders are and what they stand for. Your Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani protected Jewish neighborhoods as a police officer, helped them thrive as borough president, visited Israel as a state senator, and as mayor, has been steadfast in his unwavering support of the Jewish community. Your anger is understandable and warranted, and as public officials, we’re the easiest targets for your angst. But our position is clear, and has been from day one. We stand against hate, racism, antisemitism, Hamas and terror and we will continue to be steadfast in maintaining our bonds and commitment to public safety in our great city. It bears repeating- your police officers have a thankless job & it is important that we recognize their great work. In the early morning hours, and at the request of New York University & The New School your NYPD NEWS officers cleared the illegal encampments from their properties with unparalleled professionalism, and without incident. It is clear that these protestors are organized and well funded. What is also clear is that our youth are being radicalized and in some cases have been encouraged to escalate their protests into violence. Look no further than some of the examples of inflammatory signage and literature. The radicalization is real. The NYPD will ensure everyone’s safety during peaceful protests. We will never tolerate any unlawful, illegal, and non-peaceful protests. NYC residents demand peace and reject unlawful behavior in any form. We will not accept the narrative that persons arrested were victims, nor are we going to allow illegal behavior. Acts committed by 41 people of which 36 WERE NOT FROM THE BAY RIDGE COMMUNITY or the City of New York. 1/3 arrested have a prior arrest history for other non-peaceful protests. The lighting of incendiary devices in the street.❌ Not following lawful orders given by the NYPD. Slowing down (63) 911 calls from residents of Bay Ridge during the protest. ❌ Throwing objects at our Police Officers.❌ Spitting and throwing water on our Police Officers.❌ Riding on the roof of a moving MTA bus.❌ Using sound reproduction devices without a permit.❌ Resisting or interfering with lawful arrests.❌ This was not a peaceful protest by some. At City Hall today, I placed a drone in NYC’s time capsule proof that innovation in public safety delivers real results. Critics said it wouldn’t work. Instead, drones helped apprehend violent offenders, rescued 40 swimmers this summer, and helped save over 200 kids i who were found Subway suffering. Parents were shown video that helped intervene and get their children help.
