born in a garage🤘🏾and written while I was reading octavia butler’s 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳, “idea 1” is about what it feels like to exist in this climate — the weight of being expected to witness, absorb, and speak truth at a time when the world feels like it's unraveling. that's a particular kind of burden Black women know intimately. this song doesn't offer answers, it just refuses to look away. produced by the brilliant Oscar Scheller additional guitar by Scarlet House co-written with my talented bestie janiva ellis mixed by moi 💁🏾♀️ visual directed by 91 rules creative direction yasser abubeker

TRANS PEOPLE HAVE ALWAYS EXISTED. I had the honor of contributing to this incredible compilation on a song called “within without.” the poem i’m reading was written by Nsámbu Za Suékama and the beautiful accompaniment was produced by Green-House. my life and work has been deeply affected by the love, insights and companionship of black trans femmes. it’s really important for me to center that contribution and highlight the impact that so many have had not just on my music, but on my actual quality of life. the reality is this: since 2013, 372 transgender and gender-expansive ppl have been victims of fatal violence in the US. of that total, 274 were Black trans women. les just marinate on that for a second. means the world to be able to share some bts of my process but even more to be able to talk about this live album as a part of my praxis. one thing about my kelelians 👽 is y'all be smart but also down for the shits! lol whether we talking about remixes/the rave/raging, aquaphoria, this v personal live record or the politic behind it all - y'all never miss. and will make a meme about it! 🤷🏾♀️ it really makes me feel so seen, like there's real purpose behind this community🫂 thx again to my team/crew who made it possible for us to have this moment together!!
