When they called the F2 on Thomas after the SLO-Mo film circulated. ESPN was upset narratives were being made because it wasn’t in game speed. Now when the F2 is called on Carrington, espnW says you have to slow the film down to judge it properly, because it looks worse at game speed. Andraya thinks it should have been a F1. ITS CONFIRMED. Sheryl Swoopes was supposed to call the Fever game yesterday, but because she cannot act like a professional commentator, she was replaced by Nancy Lieberman. Remember it Caitlin’s rookie year, when they asked Jewel Loyd about Caitlin after their loss to the Fever and Jewel refused to even talk about her. When we talked about it, we were told that reporters never are supposed to ask a team after a loss about another opposing player, and of course no one would say anything nice. We were gaslit yet again.

I came to the WNBA because of Clark. I have become a fan of other players through watching Fever games and other games subsequently since I have gotten here. I did it reluctantly because of media members like this, who continually labeled all the new fans as bad. Said we didn’t do our homework, needed to respect the legends, and we needed to understand our favorite wasn’t the best and there would be an adjustment period because she was going to play with grown women. But imagine a world where they didn’t pushback on new fans coming in thinking their favorite was the best, and just welcomed them and organically let them become fans of other players and the WNBA. Imagine their priority was to grow the game, rather than to gate keep it.

This type of commentary is all emotion based and zero common sense. You had Caitlin Clark, your biggest ratings draw, get an 8th tech on a nationally televised broadcast. The whole world watching was told Caitlin won’t play Tuesday against the Liberty, another huge potential ratings draw, and another nationally televised game on a major network. Ratings are a major factor in getting ALL WNBA players paid. So of course the league wanted to do damage control, on an obviously poor call, and correct it in a timely manner, from a business standpoint at the very least. If you think that the Sun vs Seattle demands that same type of urgency, you have zero business acumen. I absolutely know Annie Costabile gets this, but I guess when you’re paid by the The Athletic you need to “absorb” their culture.

First off, the Atlanta game wasn’t “earlier this season”. It was last season. I was at that game. It wasn’t even remotely the same thing. Caitlin was going for the ball, no wind up, no bent arm. Blatant lying stokes these fires even more, then you complain about it. Can you debate whether it should have been a F1? Sure. These two were not the same thing.
