The Portland fire department announced they will no longer respond to Homeless fires, unless the fire is not contained. They are doing this because about half their calls throughout the year are Homeless related. Do you consider this fire contained?

An insane one minute on the streets of Portland. A 60-year-old educating a young severely mentally ill runaway how to smoke fentanyl while a man who is high as hell holds on to a woman so he doesn’t fall as a former teenage runaway walks by with a fentanyl straw in her mouth

I ended up tying up emergency services. While driving home, I heard someone screaming under a bridge. When I checked it out, I found a developmentally delayed homeless woman with what looked like a serious leg injury. I called paramedics and stayed with her until they arrived. She told me she’s been homeless since she was 17 and is now 41. When the paramedics showed up, she suddenly became unsure if she wanted help. She crawled out from under the bridge, started yelling at them, and ultimately refused treatment. Then she limped off into the dark. I tracked her down afterward, and she gave me a half-hearted explanation for why she said no. It’s no wonder emergency services are overwhelmed. I’d love to know how many calls end exactly like this: someone in clear crisis, responders doing everything they can, and the person refusing care at the last second. I don’t regret calling 911. Her leg looked bad, and she asked for help. The medics handled it professionally, but in the end she declined. The fact that she’s been homeless her entire adult life says a lot. She receives Social Security, yet still lives on the street. Tonight was another reminder of a painful truth: you can’t help someone who doesn’t want to help themselves.

I filmed the homeless man stealing cases of water, running them across the street, empty them behind the bushes and returning the empty bottles to the very store he stole them from. Behind those bushes were multiple plastic wrappings that held the cases of water which means he’s been doing this for a while. Fred Meyer has security, but they’re not allowed to actually stop anybody. They could only use their words.

Warning Graphic. A homeless woman OD’ing on fentanyl on the streets of Portland minutes after Harm Reduction activists came by and handed out pipes. I was the only one with Narcan and fortunately she lived. Immediately afterwards we realized the guy next to her was overdosing.

I interviewed a homeless woman 8 1/2 months pregnant who’s still a regular fentanyl user. She shared that she gave birth a year ago, and her child was born addicted to fentanyl and he went through withdrawals for five days. We offered to get her into a shelter and she declined.

I met a homeless man from Nigeria under a bridge in Salem, Oregon. He’s been in the states for five years and has been homeless for a few years. He said he wants a hand up not a handout and would take a job, but all the system has offered him only things that keep him

I found a body on the streets of Portland. 911 was called and it took them two hours to arrive. He was clutching tinfoil meaning he died of a fentanyl overdose. I guarded the body because multiple Homeless were trying to go through his pockets. This is not unusual. I find bodies all the time. This is the sad reality of the streets.
