Yesterday, the President of the United States said something that should terrify Japan. And almost nobody in my country is talking about it. Donald Trump just sat down with Xi Jinping in Beijing. Their first face-to-face since October. And right after the meeting, Trump said this — America does not need the Strait of Hormuz open. China does. Not us. Them. Now, why should you care? Because right now, Japan has forty-three ships stuck inside the Persian Gulf. Forty-three. Twenty thousand sailors. Sixty percent of our May oil is being rerouted the long way around. And the two most powerful men on Earth just decided that the waterway keeping our lights on is a Chinese problem. Not an American one. Not a Japanese one. A Chinese one. They also agreed on something they’re calling “strategic stability” for the next three years. Beautiful words. Two superpowers writing the rules of Asia for the rest of this decade. And Japan? Japan imports 99% of its oil. Over 90% comes from the Middle East. And almost all of it passes through one narrow waterway — the Strait of Hormuz.
