To expand on this, undercranking DOES NOT WORK if you as a performer don’t have good timing, rhythm, & shapes. Technically you should only be going 70-80% speed on a take. What matters is what I listed + acting and character motivation. The goal is to not make it look sped up!

The whole opening sequence is genius because yeah on the reveal of it being 1997 LA, you’re wondering “ok but how much worse can it get than a Central American Jungle?” Then after the next 2 minutes, you’re like “Oh this is much worse.” Mfs are living in a Concrete Jungle.

How does this line always fly over people’s heads? It’s very clear that Pa Kent is saying that unconfidently because he doesn’t know how to guide a super kid who — if found out — would be robbed of a normal life at such a young age. I don’t understand what’s so hard to grasp.

ironically one of my favorite Chuck Norris fights wasn’t in Way of the Dragon but in the 2000’s sitcom Yes, Dear where he shadows Jimmy but when Jimmy decides to cut ties because Chuck is just a normal guy, Chuck hilariously gets the opportunity to show his badassery. RIP. OSU!🥋

this should’ve taken the runtime of the stupid Fortnite bit… “You killed my Master Damo and now I’m gonna kill you!” Michael Jai White using a stereotypical 70’s English Dub accent for his character was such a genius move, makes everything feel that much more Shaw Bros.

Soderbergh’s Direction/collaboration with the Fight Team (see below tweet please!) is fuckin masterful! Love the way he keeps everything in a wide or medium close up. Doesn’t even have a score. He lets the fight breathe and tell the story. Also his edits are fuckin cleeean.

Stanley Clarke deserves more credit as he composed iconic soundtracks like Boyz N the Hood, Poetic Justice, Roll Bounce, etc. His ability to implement what we know as Smooth Jazz into a traditional film score was really fckin cool. An underrated legend!

Eastern Condors has this great fight between Sammo and Billy Chow where Sammo keeps the camera as stationary as possible not for any reason other than he already knows how he wants it look in post. He doesn’t need the camera to accentuate the movement. Theyre just going for it 👊🏽

here’s the thing about quick cuts & fast edits: every cut HAS to be intentional. IMO if you’re cutting quickly just to hide the double or work around an actor that can’t do choreo, you lose the impact/story in your Action. I always point to Pedicab Driver as the opposite of this.
