On this day in 1990, the last Citroën 2CV (“Two Horses”) was built. Between 1948 and 1990, Citroën produced more than 9 million 2CVs and their derivative models. Its design was arguably the most original since the Ford Model T. Who doesn’t love this umbrella on wheels? ❤️

Pure cult! There’s a Renault Avantime (2001) just around the corner from us. Only 8,557 were built, with 218 sold in the Netherlands. Unbelievable that this project was a failure. I love how the B-pillars are absent from the side windows. One big coupé. And Clarkson got it right.

During WWII, Franco ordered fortifications on Gran Canaria, fearing a British invasion despite Spain’s neutrality. The Arinaga Battery became one of the island’s key coastal defenses. Its remains can still be explored, including a vast tunnel system carved into the mountain.

After a life of sex, drugs, and rock ’n’ roll, Dutch rock star Herman Brood died after jumping from the roof of the Hilton Hotel in Amsterdam on this day in 2001. The last time I saw him perform was in 1991 in Tübingen, Germany. The first half of the show was disastrous. He was heavily stoned and repeatedly sang the simple, almost childlike song Sunday Morning by The Velvet Underground. The German audience grumbled loudly, clearly unhappy with what they were seeing. During the intermission, I spotted Brood’s manager, Koos van Dijk. I told him things weren’t going well. He laughed and told me not to worry. Carrying two bottles of whisky, he disappeared into the singer’s dressing room. A little later, a reborn Herman Brood walked back onto the stage. With incredible energy, he launched into his best songs. The roof nearly came off the small venue. The German crowd loved it, chanting, “Hi ha ho, Herman geht nie K.O.” Until July 11, 2001…

Color footage of a Dutch submarine exercise in Indonesian waters. During World War II, the Dutch Navy operated 24 submarines. In 1942, 15 of them were stationed in the Dutch East Indies, where they fought against the Japanese Navy. Only five of these submarines survived the war.
