Joan of Arc emerged in 1429 as a 17-year-old peasant girl guided by divine voices. Dressed in men’s armor, she convinced the dauphin Charles to give her an army. After months of English domination, she broke the siege in just nine days, turning the tide of the Hundred Years’ War and earning the title “Maid of Orléans.” She then led Charles to Reims, where he was crowned King Charles VII, restoring hope to a broken France. In 1430 she was captured at Compiègne, sold to the English, and tried for heresy and wearing men’s clothes. At 19, on May 30, 1431, she was burned at the stake in Rouen. Nearly 500 years later, in 1920, the Catholic Church declared her a saint.
