Former West Charlotte boys' basketball star turned filmmaker Thad Bonapart has done a documentary on the Charlotte Sonics AAU basketball team, which was a national power in the early '90s. The movie premieres today (Dec. 6) at Ayrsley Grand Cinema (9110 Kings Parade Blvd.) at 5 p.m. Bonapart, 50, has been working on this documentary for more than five years and has remade it twice. This is his third such film, following "The Boxing Banker," about a Charlotte boxer, and "Marshall '94," about his college basketball team. Those two films are in post production. Via a distribution deal with Tribecca One and Eyes Glued, the Charlotte Sonics documentary will stream on Amazon and Tubi in early 2026.
