Kemi Badenoch I can assure you that local councillors do an awful lot more than “look at parking and sort out the bins”. How very dismissive of you. As Leader of KCC I’m in charge of an annual budget that exceeds £2.5bn and I hold ultimate responsibility for over 9,000 staff and 81 councillors who decide on and deliver statutory frontline services to 1.6 million residents. The majority of MPs will never get anywhere near that level of responsibility. Even if they make ministerial level, they have very little actual power, authority or responsibility.

Big week at KCC. On Thursday we present our balanced budget in full council. We have made massive savings (in excess of £100m) and wiped £67m off the long term debt. And we’ve kept council tax to 3.99% - a full 20% below what the Tories had planned. For any doubters out there, please read the budget book. It’s all here in black and white:

We’ve crunched the numbers: the share of costs of illegal migration and associated asylum, plus the costs of migrants’ benefits adds up to £600 per annum pro rata for every one of Kent’s 648,393 households. £600. A lot of money. Did anyone ask you if you wanted to pay for this? Nationally the government admits it’s costing £6.4billion per year, we think it’s actually much higher. You can read our motion here:

Labour had 14 long years in opposition to come up with ideas and a plan to right the wrongs inflicted on the country by an increasingly directionless Tory party. Instead they’re now wasting time infighting and changing leader. The uk deserves better. Britain needs Reform 🩵🇬🇧

Because of our geographical location, Kent is on the frontline dealing with the small boats arrivals. The number of unaccompanied asylum seeking children - UASC - has quadrupled in the past decade. Each of these paper blocks represents 1000 arrivals - you can see how much the numbers have increased. We are legally required under the Children’s Act to provide & care for them. Once these children become adults (care leavers) they are still legally entitled to our care (food, housing, clothes etc) but we get no money from government. How is it fair to expect the Kent taxpayers to foot the bill for what is clearly a national & international crisis?
