Auston Matthews described visiting the White House yesterday as a huge honor for him and his teammates, becoming the first U.S. hockey team to win gold in 46 years. He made it clear he is not very political, but viewed the invitation as a great honor regardless of who is in office and hopes moments like this can help bring the country closer together: “We’re proud Americans, and doing something like that, winning a gold medal and representing your country, it felt like a special honor to be invited. I mean, it’s an honor. So it was pretty neat to go there, see everything, and just kind of share that experience with everybody. I don’t like to get political or get into that kind of stuff. Like I said, we’re proud Americans, and winning a gold medal, especially since it’s been 46 years since the men’s ice hockey team has done that, means a lot. The team that wins the Stanley Cup every year gets a White House invitation. I just think it’s something you do because we are proud Americans, whatever your political beliefs may be. Ahead of their first meeting since winning the gold medal with Team USA, Matthew Tkachuk says he still doesn’t understand how Auston Matthews doesn’t get the credit he deserves for the player he is. He also says Matthews was just as good of a captain on the ice as he was off the ice. “He was so incredible for our team, as a captain, as a leader, everything on and off the ice. Auston Matthews says his gold medal will go to his family, with specifically his dad saying he’s been with him through thick and thin since he was young and even got emotional seeing him cry after the US won the gold on Sunday: 🥹 “It’s for family, my dad, he’s been my number one supporter. Both my parents have, but my dad driving me to practices, he’s been there through thick and thin for me. I love him so much… I gave him a big hug when we got off the ice. Matthew Tkachuk and Brady Tkachuk both agreed that if they were on the Maple Leafs while Auston Matthews was hit by Radko Gudas, there’s no way they wouldn’t have gotten ejected sticking up for him: “Anytime something happens to your best player or captain, there has to be some sort of response. You shouldn’t have to fight for every clean hit, but if something dirty happens or a guy gets hurt, you deal with it right away. At that point, it’s not even about the points in the standings. Sticking up for your teammate matters more in a game like that. I don’t know, I think Brady and I are pretty old school in the way we think, but if we were on the Leafs, we probably wouldn’t have lasted that game without being in a scrum after every whistle. Easton Cowan says he didn’t watch much of him over the last few years, but since the start of this year, after watching a lot of NHL playoffs, he’s been looking up to Brandon Hagel as the type of player he wants to be and is drawing inspiration from his game. “Yeah, I mean, he’s a rat, he plays hard and makes plays all over the place. He’s been used in every situation and is capitalizing on his chances, so he’s very fun to watch for sure. I watch most every (playoff) game, so yeah, he’s playing unreal. 🚨🎙️ Mitch Marner on his departure from Toronto and how, especially in his last few weeks as a Leaf, things like his address getting leaked and d*ath threats being sent to him affected him and his family: “Obviously, Game 1 and 2 went amazing against Florida… Game 3 to 5 went really bad. 3 was actually a really good game, went to overtime, and they scored late to win it. But we lose Game 7… in a non-enjoyable way of all time, probably. I get home… I’m pretty disappointed, devastated. The thought also of it being my last Maple Leaf game at home. And then I get a phone call, probably five or so minutes after, from my wife’s father. He goes, ‘I just want to let you know we’ve got people sending us screenshots of a guy posting your address online, saying if people want to come pay us a visit and say their goodbyes in a quotation way… here’s the address.’ It’s a little tough, obviously. We kind of dealt with it for the last two years in a way. The market’s very passionate… they love their team… I know it, I was born and raised there, been a part of Leafs Nation for a long time. But when your family’s safety comes into question, especially having a new son, I don’t think it’s acceptable. Having full-time security at your house for two weeks after the playoffs, just to make sure no one’s coming around… even worrying about the safety of walking your dog and your child. But yeah, there’s a certain extent, once you see Stolie get up and be angry too, you want to try and give him a shot. But overall, you want to go on the power play as well. So it’s a weird area to be in. But overall, I think the power play is a useful thing in that situation.” #LeafsForever

Leafs GM Brad Treliving says regarding Auston Matthews’ future that Matthews is still under contract with the team and that those conversations are set for the offseason. For now, the focus is finishing the final 14 games: “Auston’s under contract. We’ll continue like we do with all our players and talk about things as we get into the offseason.
