The Corporation for Public Broadcasting announced today that it will be closing down by the end of the year following the passage of a rescissions package earlier this month. My team and I are still figuring out what this announcement will mean for Alaska Public Media, but rest assured that I will not back down when it comes to public broadcasting. When I return home this month, I will spend time with public broadcasters across the state to assess their needs and chart a path forward. The programming and emergency alerts these stations provide to communities throughout Alaska are vital, and I won’t give up until they receive the support they need.

On this Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we honor a man who loved this country deeply, believed in its promise, and challenged us to never accept injustice as inevitable. Dr. King’s legacy reminds us that progress takes grit, grace, and determination—and that each of us has a role to play in building a more just and united world.

I’ve been ringing the alarm since last year about the expiration of tax credits that many Alaskans have relied on to afford their healthcare. As I see it, we have no choice but to modify and extend these tax credits to get us some time to find a permanent solution to this pressing problem. I hope my colleagues join me in the coming weeks and months in rising to the challenge of finding both short-term and long-term solutions to healthcare affordability in America.

We have a lot ahead of us in 2026. Taking Greenland shouldn’t be on that list. Instead, we should continue building relationships—through trade, tourism, cultural exchange, and indigenous governance—rather than sending provocative messages that undo decades of trust.

Today I pressed DOJ on proposed cuts to law enforcement and violence prevention grants, including programs that support rural police departments, Tribal justice efforts, and survivors of domestic violence. Alaska’s communities already face enormous challenges with distance, cost, and a limited work force. They cannot afford to lose access to these critical resources. I also raised concerns about the removal of the Not Invisible Act Commission report from DOJ and Interior websites. I’m monitoring these items closely and pushing to ensure Alaska’s rural and Native communities remain a priority.

Over 160 communities in Alaska rely on one or two fuel deliveries annually, typically by barge, and price volatility is driving up costs for carriers and customers alike. I appreciated the opportunity to raise this with Secretary Burgum directly this morning, and will be working closely with the administration to help these Alaskans get their fuel on time and at the lowest possible prices.

This conflict may seem like a continent away, but the consequences are anything but distant. We all want this war to end, but it cannot end on Russia's terms. If it does, we should expect nothing more than a temporary respite before the resumption of hostilities. The appeasement of tyrants does not bring peace. Russia started this conflict and it's critical for us to stand with Ukraine to end it, not just because it's right, but because it's necessary.

As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, I recently held a hearing on the SBA’s 8(a) Business Development Program—a program designed to help Native communities thrive. This isn’t about DEI; it’s Congress fulfilling its constitutional duties and federal trust responsibility to Native peoples. Native entity-owned 8(a) participants reinvest their earnings in their communities—in line with their communities’ needs—practicing economic self-determination and building stronger futures for generations to come. Congress intentionally structured the 8(a) program to ensure these businesses are accountable to their communities while keeping the program transparent and effective. This was the right call—both for Native communities, and for their partners in the federal government.
