🇬🇧 There was something deeply ironic about the final moments of #BBCLauraK today. 🇬🇧 Britain broke from Europe with Brexit, a rupture with strange historical echoes of Henry VIII’s break with Rome. And today, the Catholic Archbishop of Westminster reminded us of “the value of the human person”. Of humanity. Families. The homeless. Our responsibility to each other. I am not a Catholic, but I went to a convent school until I was 13. I was educated in these values, they are familiar to me and comforting and above all grounding. And now Britain is about to have its first Catholic PM Andy Burnham In the last decade or so, we have lost sight of some of the most basic truths 👉Geography. Humanity. Honesty. Values. 🔥 Brexit taught us to deny our geography. 🔥 Populism taught us to divide people. 🔥 UK decided to live with dishonesty and lost sight of the value of the human person. My hopes now rest on Andy Burnham bringing those values back to government and Britain back to its rightful place in Europe and the world. People first. Place first. Humanity first. This is the change of direction Britain and Europe desperately needs.

🚨 So Nigel Farage hopes to win a by election in Clacton and escape scrutiny. Apparently the standards investigation does not automatically die. According to paragraph 40 of the Procedural Protocol to the MPs’ Code of Conduct: • The investigation would be suspended while he is no longer an MP. • If he wins the by-election and returns to Parliament, the investigation resumes. • Even if he loses, it could still be resumed. • The by-election result might influence any eventual sanction or rectification. This means a “chicken run” is not a clean escape. The donor scrutiny (Harborne £5m + Cottrell benefits) could still hang over him if he returns.

🚨 Miatta Fahnbulleh Miatta Fahnbulleh “Do you take £5 million and not declare it? Is it legitimate to take £5 million and not declare it?” Nadhim Zahawi: “Yes.” Miatta Fahnbulleh: “Pull the other one.” 😆 Nadhim Zahawi continuing Reform’s defence of Farage should be career ending at very least!

😹 😆 😹 Robert Jenrick says a Farage victory in Clacton would send a “powerful signal”. Tim Stanley wasn’t convinced: “So the message to the wider electorate is… Farage can beat a field of one talking bin?” Robert Jenrick: “Nigel Farage had the courage to put himself up for a by-election, which very few people do in politics.” Tim Stanley: “Well, you didn’t.” Jenrick: “Well… quite.” Sometimes the best interview moments need no commentary. 🤣

🤣 Surreal scenes on #Newsnight. Count Binface makes prime-time TV, Gillian Tett suggests Nigel Farage may finally have met his match, and Paddy O’Connell fails to unmask the man beneath the bin. Binface’s pitch? “Vote for me to save £350,000.” Count Binface winning now means the parliamentary standards process won’t trigger another by election. British politics is on 🔥 🗑️🇬🇧

🚨 👮 Police: “There is nothing to suggest that it was politically motivated.” Police: “I urge people not to share or engage with that speculation.” Meanwhile Farage and Reform have spent the weekend wildly speculating about Ann Widdecombe’s murder. Irresponsible doesn’t begin to cover it. Thank you to the police for acting so swiftly and bringing some facts and calm to an appalling situation.

‼️ Reports of Starmer’s anger - threatening to resign his own seat to create chaos for a Burnham suggests a mix of arrogance (refusing to accept the writing on the wall) and vindictiveness (wanting to damage the party or successor rather than facilitate a smooth transition). It’s not the behaviour of someone putting country or party first at a moment of crisis. It risks making the exit even messier and further damaging Labour’s reputation. The country needs a clean, orderly transition. Andy Burnham has the mandate from Makerfield to deliver real change. No more drama. Time to move forward for the country.

Former MI6 chief Sir Alex Younger on Brexit: “Putin would have been absolutely delighted by our decision.” “So would Xi. France has effectively eclipsed us. Brexit has marginalised us.” Most striking of all: “Just nobody mentions the UK.” Very sad that Sir Alex Younger, chief of the Secret Intelligence Service, born on July 4, 1963, died of pancreatic cancer on June 2, 2026, aged 62

🚨 Victoria Derbyshire asks Richard Tice how alarmed he and Nigel Farage are by the horrific murder of Ann Widdecombe. Within seconds Tice is interpreting the statutory phrase “acts of terrorism” as suggesting something ‘bigger, broader’ and then pivots to the risks faced by Reform MPs in Parliament. No mention of frightened poor Ann must’ve been in her own home and her family now grieving. And if Parliament really is impossible to secure, perhaps we finally need a modern Parliament building fit for the 21st century.

Trump says the decision to bomb Iran came after advice from Jared Kushner, Steve Witkoff and Pete Hegseth. A real estate developer. A television host. And the president’s son-in-law. Not intelligence chiefs. Not military command. The Middle East 🔥 and the global economy now lives with the consequences of that advice.

🇬🇧 🇪🇺 Nick Clegg is right. A 52–48 referendum was never a mandate for the hardest possible Brexit. A country split almost down the middle needed compromise, not triumphalism. Treating a wafer-thin majority as if it were a landslide is one reason Britain is still living with the political and economic fallout a decade later.

👏 Piers Morgan on fine form, calls it straight: “Brexit has been a pretty well unmitigated disaster.” It triggered the political chaos that’s given us seven Prime Ministers in ten years He pins primary responsibility on Nigel Farage, the “snake oil salesman” who sold impossible promises. Morgan’s advice for Andy Burnham. Call a referendum to rejoin the EU. He believes it would be a landslide because the country now knows the truth

🚨 Christiane Amanpour Christiane Amanpour on Brexit Britain 🇬🇧 “For the last 10 years it’s been anything but an island of stability. Brexit unleashed a huge amount of ruction… It has diminished Britain’s standing in the world.” Confirming what allies, investors and businesses have been saying for years. Brexit damaged our economy and Britain’s reputation across the world.

🚨 This was the moment Jeremy Hunt had no answer. Mehdi Hasan “The two biggest hits to UK growth in the last 10–15 years were brought about by Tory governments: austerity and Brexit.” Sir Jeremy Hunt MP “Covid, the global financial crisis, Ukraine?” Mehdi: “They were global issues. I’m talking about ones we did to ourselves.” That’s the point. Britain cannot keep blaming the world for wounds it inflicted on itself. #Newsnight #Brexit

🤩 WATCH Christiane Amanpour Christiane Amanpour dismantle Michael Gove Brexit boosterism in less than 40 seconds. Laura K: “Christiane says Brexit damaged Britain’s standing internationally.” Gove: “I profoundly disagree…. Christiane folds her arms… and immediately replies: 🔥 Fishermen 🔥 Farmers 🔥 Trade… Sunny uplands… AND Gove calling ELMS “world leading” is a total joke for British farmers. The shift from CAP to ELMs has brought complexity, uncertainty, delayed payments, and reduced income for too many businesses, all while facing rising costs and more imports. Brexit was sold as a chance to do better for British farming. The reality has been a difficult transition with mixed results at best. We need long-term, stable support that works for food production and the environment, not more spin. Back British farmers properly.
