Incredibly happy the 'Mouse Cleaning' restoration has finally been (partially) released. As one of my favourites, I've watched this one a ton on the Classic Collection (as far as I know, the only DVD release), so it's surreal seeing it so vibrant and clean. [1/2]

#1 - Operation: Rabbit (1952) Not just the best Coyote cartoon, but one of the best cartoons PERIOD. Densely packed with hilarious gags. The character work is outstanding. Wile E. isn't dumb, just arrogantly underestimating. He's a refreshing antagonist for Bugs to play off of.

The final minute of 'Baseball Bugs' is a masterpiece in comedy. It's the most densely packed scene in any short, with a new joke every couple seconds, either big or small. Some especially funny Bugs expressions here, with one hell of an opening line from Maltese.

One thing I like about Ralph and Sam is that the two feel more equal which sells their working relationship. 'Don't Give Up the Sheep' has my favourite example of this. The escalation here is wonderful, going on just long enough to catch you off guard with that final subversion.

'Barbary Coast Bunny' really demonstrates Bugs' likability. Though you know he's playing a character the entire time (a fun, unique premise), Mel Blanc delivers the sympathy so convincingly that you still kinda feel bad for him. An excellent performance from Daws Butler, too.

'The Big Snooze' is strange and surreal and it's fantastic. It being partially unfinished actually helps that odd fever dream feel. The smash cut to Bugs immediately wreaking havoc in Elmer's dream is also one of my biggest laughs from any short. Perfect use of music. (1/2)

'Tortoise Wins by a Hare' is already a fantastic cartoon but Mel Blanc's performance makes it legendary. He plays Bugs with such an aggressive, brash energy. By the end, the sheer desperation in Bugs' voice makes him sound like he's on the brink of tears.

'Who Killed Who?' is an excellent spoof of murder mystery films that's completely loaded with gags. The moody lighting, the corny organ music and the many tropes sell the subversive comedy through its faithfulness. It's one of Avery's best of MGM... and it was only his second.

'The Missing Mouse' may not be a horror-themed short but its unsettling final visual of a desolate, destroyed town makes it a perfect Halloween watch. I love the night theming throughout. Something about the casual way its done here gives a unique feel no other night short has.

More than anything, I love the atmosphere in 'A Grand Day Out'. Even in the tenser moments, there's a relaxed feel to the whole thing that makes it very comfortable viewing. It also really benefits the dry humour, with the long, calm silences helping the payoffs land extra hard.
