I’m running to be YOUR next Mayor because Oakland deserves a leader who can not only unite us, but will make the hard choices to create a thriving Oakland for all. At a time when Oakland is facing the real threat of bankruptcy and as revenues fall, 911 calls are put on hold, pot holes eat our tires, trash piles up on our sidewalks, and more of our neighbors are forced to live on the streets. Oakland has been stuck in dysfunction. Being a political outsider with experience inside and outside of city hall, I am uniquely positioned to do what the establishment is unwilling to do. Join us.

This morning, I cast my ballot at Eastmont Hall surrounded by four generations of my Oakland family. Grateful for the opportunity to vote for a better future — for my kids, for my family and neighbors, and for the city we all call home. Let’s finish strong, Oakland.

Oakland is closing fire stations just a week after devastating fires in Los Angeles destroyed entire neighborhoods, and our city is teetering at the edge of bankruptcy. I am outraged. The state of our city and political corruption aren’t two separate issues. They are symptoms of the same cancer in Oakland. We must reject the business-as-usual politics that brought us here. I will make hard choices and do what the establishment is unwilling to do.

Criminals believe they can come to Oakland and get away with crime because police cannot pursue them. That will end on Day 1 of my administration. I introduced my “Smart Pursuit Plan” today alongside business owners, technology and public safety advocates. We must increase the use of drones that allow police to pursue and track perpetrators until they can be brought to justice. We must also expand the use of license plate readers and surveillance cameras to hold perpetrators accountable. For these solutions to be a force multiplier, technology must be matched with police staffing. We will also immediately work towards a goal of 800 officers.

So many Oaklanders including this grandmother I met overwhelmingly voted to remove former Mayor Sheng Thao because they knew the city was moving in the wrong direction. My opponent, former Congresswoman Barbara Lee, opposed the recall of Sheng Thao even after the corruption emerged. The definition of insanity is to vote for more of the same and expect a different result. We must elect a Mayor who has experience in local government and is not beholden to the same political establishment that bankrolled Sheng Thao’s candidacy and brought the city to the brink of bankruptcy. When I am mayor, I will make the hard choices to deliver a safe and clean Oakland and will root out corruption inside Oakland City Hall.

Business-as-usual politics in Oakland has failed us. We must reopen city hall and show that Oakland is open for business. Today, I am calling for city leaders to fully open city hall because the current telecommute policy isn’t just hurting our city’s performance and efficiency—it’s hurting our small businesses and downtown corridor. Tomorrow, I will be announcing my “Open City Hall” Plan and “Small Business & Downtown Revitalization” Plan alongside former city employees and business owners.
