The first Heavy Metal band was the Velvet Underground and Nico that toured the USA and Europe in 1965-1970. The heavy metal experiment ended about 1968 when John Cale and his drones left the band. Jimmy Page formed Led Zeppelin after being inspired by the tour and demos of the first VU record. Black Sabbath emerged years later, after Led Zep recorded and the VU broke up. You can hear VU riffs in the Beatles, the Stones, iron Butterfly, steppenwolf, Van Halen the stooges, it goes on and on. It’s a shame that Sabbath never admitted to the impact the VU had on them but likely they don’t recall their wildest band days anyway.
