It's tragic that the man most responsible for how gorgeous this movie looks, Douglas Trumbull, didn't get the recognition. The movie won an Oscar but it was given to Kubrick (the only one in his career). Trumbull was nominated three more times but never won a competetive Oscar.

Here we also have a decent look at the shell. The entire puppet looked good enough they didn't need to hide anything.

But for sure it also made everyone want to have their own neon-light colored Hong Kong battle.

I felt it was the right time for another rewatch. The Black Scorpion (1957) is another collaboration between Willis O'Brien and Pete Peterson. It's one of the most brutal Western monster movies of the 1950s. I's mostly known for those drooling scorpion heads but I don't mind them

Humans bullying Gwangi for existing. I feel like posting this because it's the cleanest stop motion dinosaur ever. So many great shots that are the best of Harryhausen's career. And that's the abridged version. Gwangi is another one of Harryhausen's quasi-Kong characters.

I like how Clash of the Titans gives us this random scene showing Athena's bond with her owl. Hephaestus is played by Pat Roach better known as the guy who always fought Indiana Jones. Also Laurence Olivier, Maggie Smith, Ursula Andress, Burgess Meredith. What a cast.

In all this chaos I missed that the original epilogue to 1931 Dracula was discovered in good condition so for the first time in like 90 years we'll be able to watch the complete version of the movie after they finish restoration. Supposedly Universal doesn't care about the find.

Slightly underrated monsters of the day. The Yeti from Mummy 3.

And that other movie turned out to be The Monolith Monsters (1957). These are the "monsters" that will get you. Slowly. But they'll get you eventually. Pretty creative and there are some nice shots. They really tried every single concept in those ffilms back then.

The reveal of the giant ant in Them! happens just under 30 min into the movie. The first act is spent on the investigation in the desert. The audience doesn’t see the ants until the main characters do. The ant sounds were actually made by a bird-voiced tree frog (Hyla avivoca).

Some of the fight. Harryhausen was outdoing himself at this point he could've done at least one more. The music was composed by Miklós Rózsa, who also scored The Thief of Bagdad (1940) which can be seen as a precursor to Harryhausen's Sinbad movies. It ties together nicely.

And Jet Li turns into pseudo-Ghidorah. It's like in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.

The Blob is not as harmless as its theme song suggests. Here it starts devouring people. The film was inspired by a 1950 incident about a supposed encounter with some kind of substance that came to Earth with a meteor. But it probably had a mundane earthly origin.
