BUF PP Breakout Adjustment MTL made a clear effort to disrupt Dahlin on BUF’s initial PP breakout attempts. They were prepared for the drop and did a good job squeezing on him whenever he tried to manufacture an entry himself As the initial puck carrier, Dahlin’s job after the drop is to lay a subtle pick on a PK player, creating space for the drop players to work with. MTL initiated contact on Dahlin twice, which allowed them to jam BUF’s entry attempts and prevent clean possession In the 2nd, Dahlin and BUF adjusted. After the drop, Dahlin sprints through the middle of the ice, and the puck is slingshot back up ice to the stretch player, who bumps it back to Dahlin attacking the gap

This is the set faceoff play Mike Johnson referenced in the third period. The inside winger skates under the pile and up the wall, similar to a classic over-under play. Typically, the next look would go to the high slot for the opposite winger On this attempt, Toews activates from the weak-side defence position and cuts into the slot. Finland does a good job recognizing it, as this likely would have resulted in a Grade A chance Also... a few additional examples of over-under plays with an active weak-side defenceman for reference (more down weak side flank vs cutting through slot)

Creating Time & Space With Middle (Dot) Lane Drive Three examples leading to goals from last night where puck carrier attacks middle ice/dot lane before kicking the puck out side. Driver then continues to drive THROUGH the opposition strong side D to create time and space for the puck carrier Additionally, this indecision for the WSD in regards to his read and coverage

Playoff hockey means tighter checking, heavier pressure, and more detailed structure—reducing time and space all over the ice Last night highlighted several effective rim outs used to relieve defensive pressure, change the point of attack, and extend o zone possession With space so heavily contested, these rims and strong wall play overall are necessities and critical for success

Clear offensive-zone identity shift for Carolina: • Hunt pucks • Outnumber opponents on and around the puck • Extend zone time through pressure and possession • Spread the ice low/high, release to back of net • Once possession is established and the opposition starts to wear down, create motion throughout the zone, especially downhill from the high ice • Pull defenders out of the slot, creating 1v1 isolation at the net front

Leo Carlsson ➡ Owning The Middle Two clips leading to goals where Carlsson plays goal line to goal line • Provides great defensive support in his own end • Supports underneath the puck battle through the neutral zone • Transports pucks effectively and with speed through the neutral zone • Attacks the middle of the ice • Distributes pucks off the rush

Some great examples over the past few days highlighting strong breakout retrieval habits under pressure — and the ability to connect exits to possession entries and, ultimately, goals. Notice the scanning habits prior to puck touches, creating short support and numbers around the puck, and then moving it to speed/support through the dot line

Longer 📽️ but had to pull clips from game 7 in regards to FLA's checking game, specifically the D. From start to finish FLA D were aggressive and on top of the blue jerseys. Score, time, etc... circumstances did not impact style, their identity is their identity

One element of the Panthers game I have come to love is their ability to provide subtle picks & cutoffs on puck retrievals, leading to zone exits Just "getting in the way" forces the forechecking players to change their route, even just slightly, buying time for their teammates
