Geneticist Dr Bushra Afroze and Fyezah Jehan 👩🏻‍💻🇵🇰's Paediatrics team at Aga Khan University launched Newborn Screening today with Dr Lena Jafri, Dr Salman Kirmani, Dr Azeema Jamil, Dr Ghulam Zainab... What's unique is the heel prick test to draw one drop of 🩸blood to be able to detect 51 disorders. Eg: Congenital hypothyroidism in which it doesn't produce enough hormone and the 🐣kid's mental and physical growth is impaired. If you leave it to 2yrs to discover your child isn't talking/walking on time, it's sometimes too late. Now you can tell immediately. And 1 pill, thyroxin, for life fixes this. This is great for folks who married their cousins, btw. Costs Rs9,000 and takes 5 days. Globally this screening is done to tell burden of disease, which we don't know in Pakistan. I have been a staunch believer in local govt systems. The DC system could work but doesn’t. I filed an application with proof of a commercial entity working in my neighbourhood. It is a company whose owner is connected to the most powerful minister in Sindh. He held loud parties in the garden. After the DC application, he approached seniors of mine. Promises were made. I explained the noise problem. He promised it would not happen. It still does. After 3am sehri parties the caterer crashes around removing the trestle tables. The system does not work even if you are on the correct legal side. Everyone is just expected to accept this group that rules Sindh and we are stuck with their shitty systems. There is a gender angle to this: single woman households, no matter what their class, have next to no support from the law or system and are vulnerable no matter what they do.
