It’s a special feeling to celebrate your birthday in the place you were born, especially when you’ve been away from home for so long. I am grateful to Pakistan’s government and security officers for giving me that opportunity last week. I met educators and activists who are breaking down the barriers between children and their education. Artists who imagine the future and remind us that our best days are ahead. Girls determined to pursue their dreams, from the football pitch to the classroom. My heart is full of gratitude for everyone who made this trip possible, but even more so for the people and organisations who are working to turn every girl’s right to learn into her reality.

The incredible team at INARA provides frontline relief to these children & their families. We visited homes, a mental health support centre, a school & a hospital where INARA helps injured, displaced people become more independent and build dignified lives. INARA staff told me that children show up to school on time every day, eager to learn and participate in mental health programmes like equine therapy. A teenage girl told me that when she came to Egypt she was so angry & in shock that she couldn’t speak for months. She built a connection with a horse, being able to take care of an animal helped her open up to people again. Malala Fund has supported INARA since last year, and today we’re announcing a new $100,000 grant to continue their work in Egypt & Gaza.

The EU has invited Taliban officials to Brussels to discuss a migration deal — and today I am shaken and deeply disturbed by this. This is the same Taliban that banned girls from secondary schools and forced them into marriage. The same Taliban that, earlier this month, arrested dozens of women in Herat for how they were dressed. The same Taliban that detains, beats and executes women who dare to speak out or break their rules. Through its system of gender apartheid, the Taliban have erased women and girls from public life. Europe must not legitimise a regime responsible for one of the worst human rights crises in the world. Any engagement with the Taliban must begin and end with the rights of Afghan women and girls.

Flooding in Pakistan has destroyed schools and devastated communities. My heart is with all Pakistanis in this time of crisis. We must act now to support relief efforts, rebuild infrastructure and ensure girls continue learning. I am announcing new grants to Idara-e-Taleem-o-Aagahi (ITA) and the Mountain Institute for Education and Development to help survivors in the greatest need. If you can, please support them too.

One year ago, I had the honour of delivering the 21st Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture in Johannesburg. With Mandela’s legacy in mind, I wanted to focus on a very clear and personal injustice I felt was not receiving enough attention: the erasure of Afghan women and girls under the Taliban’s brutal regime of gender apartheid. Against the odds, Afghan activists have built a global movement to hold the Taliban accountable. Because of their efforts, governments recently agreed to advance negotiations on the crimes against humanity treaty at the UN, bringing us one big step closer to recognising gender apartheid as a crime under international law. In 1998, at a celebration of the life of anti-apartheid leader Chief Albert Luthuli, Nelson Mandela said, ‘Real leaders must be ready to sacrifice all for the freedom of their people.’ Afghan women and girls are demonstrating their courage, determination and the real leadership Mandela described — and we must all stand with them.
