"New York City spends roughly $37 billion/year to educate about 850,000 kids. That's over $42,000 per child per year. And the results are abysmal. Two-thirds of fourth graders can't do math properly and almost three-quarters can't read at grade level... ...What we can do, Mr. Mayor, is tell every mom in NYC that the $42,000 currently spent on that terrible education is going to be her money." Jeff Yass, one of the 2026 Alexander Hamilton Award honorees, on how we can solve NYC's education crisis through school choice.

"There is still racism today. It hasn't gone away entirely, and so it's something that's easy to exploit, it is one way to explain why people continue to use it." MI's Jason Riley discusses racism's rise and influence on the new City Journal Podcast:

.Ilya Shapiro "The deans, the presidents, the provosts...what they are is spineless cowards, unwilling to enforce their own rules to police the inmates that have taken over their institutions." "They're amoral. They want to give grease to the squeaky wheel because they've made a career, and they've risen to this high level in academic bureaucracy, by navigating the incentive structure with which they're faced. And that incentive structure has always said, when you have these radicals protesting, placate them, because the other side's not gonna do anything." Ilya Shapiro sits down with Zack Smith to answer the question: What's wrong with America's law schools?

"Newsom is taking millions of dollars from taxpayers to give tablets to every inmate in California. He doesn't deny that part—that's happening. He just says that the usage is being monitored. Even if it is, which it clearly is not—not well enough, anyway—it's totally outrageous to give tablets to prisoners... ...I don't care if all they're doing is going to Instagram to find fun new recipes...it would still be an outrage that they have a tablet. Prison is not supposed to be fun." Matt Walsh on Christopher F. Rufo ⚔️ and Haley Strack's recent City Journal investigation:

.Daniel Di Martino leaves a DSA member speechless over her support of Maduro: DSA member: "If socialism is innately so dangerous and so bad, why does the U.S. expend so much energy sanctioning these countries and overthrowing governments and attempting to overturn the democratic will of the people?" DDM: "I would think that you would support it, because you say we should arrest Benjamin Netanyahu, so I imagine you support the arrest of Nicolas Maduro?..." "I do not support the overthrow of democratically elected leaders anywhere in the country." "Oh! So Netanyahu, who is a democratically elected leader, is bad, but Maduro, who destroyed a nation with 8 million refugees, he's a good guy because he’s a socialist, right?"

"The Newsom administration devoted a significant sum of money towards broad-based population prevention. Very few dollars were allocated for the kind of psychiatric residential treatment facilities that could help kids who repeatedly accessed emergency rooms for crisis. The result was a total mismatch between what was needed and what was offered to people." Christina Buttons discusses her City Journal report about how the equity agenda has consumed California's youth mental health crisis:

A state law in Colorado made it illegal to counsel people regarding gender dysphoria unless you are going to take a progressive approach, like affirming a sex change. The Supreme Court, 8-1, ruled that the law was unconstitutional. Ilya Shapiro and Rafael A. Mangual discuss the Supreme Court’s most consequential recent decisions on the latest City Journal podcast:

A DSA leader refuses to say that rapists and murderers should be in prison. Daniel Di Martino: "Do you think killers should go to prison? Rapists should go to prison? Noncitizens who kill or rape, should they be deported?" DSA leader: "Who I think should go to prison are the people who are protecting the, the Jeffrey Epstein—" DDM: "Just answer the question! Do you think people should go to prison for being murderers? This is so simple, you could just say yes."

New York City is about to make shopping on Amazon way more expensive. The city council is considering a bill that would end the use of third-party contractors for deliveries—forcing every company engaging in last mile deliveries to get a license from the city. That would add an estimated $600 to the delivery fees of every customer. Adam Lehodey in City Journal:

. Daniel Di Martino, who fled Venezuela after socialists took over the country, debates a DSA member: "[Socialists] destroyed the richest country in Latin America, and the DSA is an organization that supported the destruction of Venezuela. Your team traveled to Venezuela to support the dictator of my country, that 8 million of us fled, and now you come to America and say, 'Let’s do it over again! I promise, we are different!'" DSA member: "The capitalists are destroying my country of America."

. Heather Mac Donald on the mass rampages breaking out across the country: "They're always referred to as the 'teen takeovers'. It's a very - let me just call it an antiseptic presentation, and the reader comments in the media are really something. They'll say like, 'Hmm, I'm looking at these videos. I'm noticing something that is not being reported in the press.' So the public is onto the lie."

"You hand a diagnosis to a child...and you forever change that child's view of himself or herself. That's what we were seeing. We were seeing kids handed a limitation and told: 'There's something wrong with you, and only science can fix you. It's out of your control.'... That's a devastating thing to tell a child." Abigail Shrier with Rafael A. Mangual on the City Journal podcast last week:

.Daniel Di Martino on GDP and fertility rates: "Is Latin America more virtuous being poorer than America? Are their families stronger? I'll tell you a shocking statistic. This year, the average American family has more kids than the average Mexican family. I'll give you an even more shocking statistic. Non-Hispanic white fertility in the United States is higher than Mexican fertility in Mexico. Latin America, Chile has the fertility of Japan right now. Are those countries richer than the United States?...There is something happening around the globe, and many people are blaming it on the wrong thing here in this country."
