VERULAM, KZN — A 29-year-old woman was found in an incoherent state lying on the roadside on Ireland Street in Verulam CBD on Saturday afternoon. Members of the public contacted Reaction Unit South Africa, and Reaction Officers along with paramedics responded to the scene at about 16:17. The woman appeared disorientated and was initially unable to provide her name, address, or next of kin details. While receiving medical treatment, the woman produced an identity document and told responders she worked as an escort in Umhlanga. She provided conflicting accounts of what led to her condition. In her first statement she alleged she had been kidnapped in Umhlanga by an unknown man who drugged and sexually assaulted her. She later said she had met three men from Chatsworth who claimed they were travelling to Richards Bay, and alleged she was drugged, sexually assaulted and dumped on the R102 between Umhlanga and Mount Edgecombe. Both versions were captured on BodyCam devices 118 and 002. The woman was assessed on scene and transported to a medical facility for further treatment and evaluation. Reaction Officers are attempting to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

21-year-old Kyle Maylall was arrested by Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) in Redcliffe, KZN, for allegedly committing 23 housebreakings and thefts in Brindhaven. Maylall, who was tracked down after CCTV footage surfaced, is also out on bail for four other cases related to housebreaking, theft, and heroin possession.

Two SAPS officers were rescued on Tuesday after a mob surrounded their vehicle in Ndwedwe and threatened to set it alight while they transported a murder suspect. The officers were trapped for about an hour as roads were barricaded and armed individuals blocked their exit. RUSA Reaction Officers Nathi Ndaba and Philani Mkhulisi had earlier arrested the suspect, who was wanted for murdering a 22-year-old man. He was found hiding under a bed and handed to SAPS without incident. A crowd then gathered, demanding the suspect. RUSA deployed a helicopter and reaction team who secured the scene, cleared the barricades, and escorted the SAPS vehicle to safety. No injuries were reported. HARTBEESPOORT – A new video shared by Fisheries HBP shows Hartbeespoort Dam almost disappearing under a thick green mat of water hyacinth, algae and trapped rubbish. The Department of Water and Sanitation says about 33.84% of the dam’s surface is currently covered. The footage also shows plastic and other waste caught in the vegetation, making boating and fishing unsafe. The pollution is being driven by years of untreated sewage, agricultural and industrial runoff flowing in from the Crocodile and Jukskei rivers. Water and Sanitation Deputy Minister Sello Seitlholo said the crisis is predominantly caused by municipalities failing to treat wastewater. Independent tests also show extremely high levels of ammonia and phosphates, which fuel algae blooms and oxygen loss that have led to fish kills. Magalies Water is running a three-year cleanup using mechanical harvesters and manual teams, as well as pilot projects to add oxygen and reduce nutrients. Authorities say real improvement will take years unless upstream municipalities fix treatment plants. Community groups continue to document the damage on video and are calling for urgent action to protect tourism, fish stocks and water quality.

LADYSMITH – An RTI roadblock in Ladysmith ended with 46 motorists arrested this week, including one who gave officers a now-viral excuse after failing a breathalyzer test. Despite empty Lion Lager beer cans being clearly visible in his vehicle, the motorist insisted he knew nothing about them and claimed to be “sober just like an eight-year-old boy coming from school.” When questioned about the cans, he said they were just a reminder that “an empty can makes the most noise.” He further denied drinking, stating, “I don’t drink Lion at all. I only had one rum shot last night. Maybe you also had one last night because you are as sober as me.” The denial left the RTI team both amused and flabbergasted. The motorist was taken to the police cells along with 45 others arrested during the operation.

The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has reprimanded eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba after video emerged of him telling activist Yeshelen Govender, a South African of Indian descent, “I’m talking with the Africans. I’m not talking to you” during a 16 June 2026 oversight visit at Sherwood Park, Durban. The remarks drew criticism from community leaders and analysts who called them divisive. On Monday 22 June, ANC KZN leaders mediated a meeting between Xaba and Govender. Both expressed regret and resolved the matter. The provincial party reiterated that all citizens belong by birth and constitutional right, regardless of race. The incident also prompted an SA Human Rights Commission complaint by MK Party MP Visvin Reddy, citing violations of equality and dignity. Upon becoming aware of the footage, members from Schoemansdal SAPS acted swiftly and launched an investigation. Police traced and located the elderly victim, who was provided with necessary medical attention. The victim also furnished police with further details regarding the incident. As part of the ongoing investigation, a 22-year-old man has been taken in for questioning in connection with the assault. SAPS confirmed the investigation continues and "no one will be spared should more information warrant further action."

A brawl allegedly broke out following the Menlo vs EG Jansen high school rugby match on 1 August 2026, after a confrontation between players, parents, and supporters near the field. According to a spectator, a group of Menlopark old boys were supporting their team behind the posts when an EG Jansen player allegedly told them to jump over the barrier. One of the old boys allegedly replied, “Look at the scoreboard.” The spectator alleged that EG Jansen players then jumped the barrier and began hitting the Menlopark old boys. The confrontation allegedly escalated when EG Jansen parents joined in and began assaulting Menlopark supporters, while Menlopark parents allegedly tried to intervene and stop the fighting. The witness further alleged that EG Jansen players, parents, and the team doctor were involved in hitting Menlopark old boys who were behind the barrier and had not been involved in the initial exchange. No official statement has been released by either school or by rugby authorities. The cause of the incident and any disciplinary action will likely form part of an investigation.

Police are searching for two women allegedly seen on CCTV using the bank card of murdered 47-year-old Thabani Mgayo. Mgayo was reported missing on 23 July 2026 and later found murdered. Investigators say his card was used multiple times at shops in Atteridgeville, Pretoria after his disappearance. A white Toyota Hilux with registration FK 35 PS GP was also hijacked during the incident.
