How do we make Australia more prosperous? How do we encourage people to build businesses, take risks and compete with the rest of the world? Our politicians and government are spending the money that comes from our work, our risk and our effort. So we should demand more from them. More innovation. More ambition. More bold decisions. As Australians, we should expect to have one of the highest standards of living in the world. Let’s demand this from the people who lead us.

BREAKING NEWS 🚨 The NSW Government has announced plans to make sure family trusts aren't hit with unexpected stamp duty bills under proposed federal tax changes announced in the Federal Budget. Under the proposal, discretionary family trusts that opt into the Federal Government's transitional arrangements would pay no stamp duty, thanks to an Australian-first state-level rollover relief scheme. This is a big win for small business owners, giving tens of thousands of Australians more certainty and one less tax headache to worry about. Good on Premier Chris Minns and NSW Treasurer Daniel Mookhey for taking this step. I hope other states follow suit.

New pod with Punters Politics is out now! Konrad Benjamin is the creator of Punters Politics, one of Australia's fastest-growing independent political commentary channels, and a former economics and PE teacher who taught across Victoria, New South Wales and China. In this episode, he sits down with me to dissect the incentive structures that shape Australian politics, corporate power and the housing crisis. The conversation moves from classroom economics to gas royalties, corporate lobbying, the staffer-to-lobbyist pipeline, and what a genuine fix might actually look like. christopher joye on the underlying forces keeping inflation elevated in Australia. In this episode of Straight Talk, I sit down with economist Chris Joye for round five, a frank conversation about government spending, immigration, productivity and Australia’s economic future. Chris argues that Australia’s challenges run deeper than events in the Middle East. He examines what he describes as $660 billion in additional government debt since 2022, the pressure population growth is placing on housing and infrastructure, and an expanding public service alongside declining private sector productivity. He also questions the Reserve Bank’s “narrow path” strategy, whether political influence has shaped its approach to inflation, and the cost to Australian households. I then ask Chris what needs to change: how to rein in spending, lift productivity and get Australia’s economy back on track.

How Lang Hancock, father of Gina Rinehart, made his wealth. He has spent more than 50 years at the centre of Australian financial journalism, and few people alive have watched this country’s booms, busts, and policy shifts with more clarity. In this conversation, Alan and I trace the arc of Australian capitalism from the Poseidon nickel boom of 1969 through to the rise of Elon Musk and the AI era. Alan draws striking parallels between the charismatic deal-makers of the 1980s, Bond, Elliott, Skase, and the story-sellers of today, and explains why irrational exuberance always takes longer to unravel than anyone expects. He also gives a frank assessment of what Australian housing policy has got wrong, why superannuation remains the country’s greatest economic achievement, and what capital gains tax reform should actually look like.

Why Naomi Simson is fearful that people don't feel like it's worth having a crack anymore. Simson is the founder of Red Balloon and co-founder of the Big Red Group. In this conversation, Naomi breaks down how she built a business that now delivers an experience every 16 seconds to small businesses across Australia and New Zealand. Simson also delivers her unfiltered assessment of the recent federal budget, arguing that too many changes implemented too quickly will cripple business confidence during an already challenging period of technological disruption. Economics expert on the CGT changes Leith van Onselen is one of Australia's most credible economists and a straight-talking critic of government policy. In this episode, we dissect the Albanese government's latest budget and its real impact on inflation, housing affordability, and living standards. Leith explains why this isn't tax reform but simply a tax grab, how immigration policy is driving the housing crisis, and why Australia's productivity growth ranks among the worst in the OECD. We explore the disconnect between headline GDP figures and per capita reality, the expansion of the government-funded sector, and what this means for future generations.

I am not buying this narrative around the budget. New Straight Talk with Chris Richardson is out now! Chris Richardson is one of Australia’s most quoted economists and the founder of Rich Insight, bringing decades of expertise from his time at Deloitte Access Economics to decode complex fiscal policy.
