More Fireworks in Rutland 🎆 After town voters rejected a Proposition 2½ tax override, town responded officials canceled the Fourth of July parade, fireworks, and concert. The issue? The event was already being funded through private donations from residents and local businesses. It sure seems like it wasn't about money. Officials claimed staffing shortages made the event unsafe, but community members suggested bringing in outside help to handle those concerns. Even the Police Chief acknowledged that was an option back in April, but dismissed it as "not appropriate." So instead of using available solutions, the town chose to cancel the celebration entirely. Now the event is gone, and the donations raised for it are being kept by the town. Residents had the temerity to say no to higher taxes. Now, many feel as though they're being retaliated against.

Controlling energy costs and forcing a rapid shift to intermittent alternative energy sources are not compatible goals. Governor Maura Healey is doubling down on them anyway. “I’m not backing down,” she says, while pushing for more executive orders to lock in Massachusetts’ energy mix for the next 10 years. Solar. Wind. Geothermal. Battery storage. Demand response. All dictated from the top. Massachusetts residents are already paying some of the highest electricity prices in the country. Instead of reassessing what’s driving those costs, the response is more mandates, more targets, and more political stubbornness. This isn’t flexibility and this is not listening to people's needs. It’s doubling down on a strategy that’s already making energy less affordable.

During this weeks Senate budget debate, State Senator Patricia Jehlen called Massachusetts’ new $63.4 BILLION state budget an "austerity budget." Let that sink in. The budget grew roughly 4% over last year and nearly 60% over the last decade, yet Beacon Hill politicians still act like government is being starved of resources. Included in the budget were more taxpayer-funded earmarks, expanded rental assistance spending, funding for advocacy organizations, and amendments weakening oversight requirements for public benefits. Meanwhile, taxpayers are struggling with out of control housing costs, ever increasing energy bills, and local tax overrides because of Beacon Hill's chronic underfunding of local aid to cities and towns. Record spending. Out-of-touch politicians. And priorities that couldn’t be more misplaced.

Sen. Cynthia Friedman says it's too expensive for people here illegally to obtain legal status, so taxpayers should cover the cost of lawyers to help them apply. But that raises a bigger question. If someone can't afford to become legal, how are they affording housing, food, and healthcare in one of the most expensive states in the country? And if they’re not, who is paying for that? Hint: it's taxpayers. Beacon Hill’s answers to everything is to shift more costs onto taxpayers, without addressing the long-term impact of their policies. Massachusetts taxpayers are already stretched thin. How much more can they be expected to carry?
