More Fireworks in Rutland 🎆 After town voters rejected a Proposition 2½ tax override, town responded officials canceled the Fourth of July parade, fireworks, and concert. The issue? The event was already being funded through private donations from residents and local businesses. It sure seems like it wasn't about money. Officials claimed staffing shortages made the event unsafe, but community members suggested bringing in outside help to handle those concerns. Even the Police Chief acknowledged that was an option back in April, but dismissed it as "not appropriate." So instead of using available solutions, the town chose to cancel the celebration entirely. Now the event is gone, and the donations raised for it are being kept by the town. Residents had the temerity to say no to higher taxes. Now, many feel as though they're being retaliated against.

Residents were told that even if they raised the money themselves, the town would not allow the celebration to happen. Even if private citizens and businesses paid for the fireworks and staffing themselves, the police union would file a grievance. The town didn't get its way, the vote failed, and town is now making good on its promises. No parade. No fireworks. No concert. Even though the community already paid for it. Maybe they'll try to steal Christmas next?

Craney, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance. “More than 100,000 residents signed petitions to put tax relief before the voters. They followed the process, did the work, and earned a place on the ballot. There is no such thing as a "minor" constitutional problem. Attorney General Andrea Campbell now appears to be acknowledging that her office knew the rent control ballot question had a problem tied to religion, but dismissed it as "minor" and certified it anyway. The SJC saw it differently. On Tuesday, the Court removed the rent control question from the ballot because the religious housing exemption meant the proposal could not legally proceed. That should raise serious questions. The Attorney General is not supposed to be a cheerleader for certain ballot questions. Her office is supposed to be the legal gatekeeper. That means protecting the integrity of the process before campaigns, voters, donors, volunteers, and taxpayers spend months fighting over a question that never should have been cleared in the first place. Instead, Campbell’s office let a constitutionally defective question move forward, only for the Court to stop it later. This comes just days after the SJC tossed the income tax cut question because Campbell’s office failed to write a fair summary. Having three certified petitions removed by the SJC in one cycle is unprecedented. The ballot process being thrown into chaos by the very office responsible for keeping it on track.

During this weeks Senate budget debate, State Senator Patricia Jehlen called Massachusetts’ new $63.4 BILLION state budget an "austerity budget." Let that sink in. The budget grew roughly 4% over last year and nearly 60% over the last decade, yet Beacon Hill politicians still act like government is being starved of resources. Included in the budget were more taxpayer-funded earmarks, expanded rental assistance spending, funding for advocacy organizations, and amendments weakening oversight requirements for public benefits. Meanwhile, taxpayers are struggling with out of control housing costs, ever increasing energy bills, and local tax overrides because of Beacon Hill's chronic underfunding of local aid to cities and towns. Record spending. Out-of-touch politicians. And priorities that couldn’t be more misplaced.
