Guys do not do this anymore. Checks the protection, D disguises Cover-3 but he sees the S fly into the flat to replace the WLB and the MLB drop to hook. Goes right to the over which he knows has a tiny window because the MLB has to flip his hips to make a play. Elite process

Mendoza is basically a carbon copy of Sam Darnold at USC in that he sees things downfield on time and even really well, but is blind to his surroundings, manages space poorly, and misjudges how quickly guys will close on him.

Using indicator motions to sniff out pressure looks, changing protections, changing who he is hot off of, whittling down his options based in coverage so the ball is consistently out quick. Teams are awfully lucky he’s 45, 5 years out of practice, and out of shape.

Obvious, telegraphed man coverage against Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. They don’t stop being Chase and Higgins because Burrow is out!!! Burrow almost never gets this look. The Jags secondary is not good, they can’t cover him like this, whether it’s Burrow or Nate Peterman.

Unreal throw by Sayin. Played pretty well overall, they just could not block Ruben Bain and co even a little bit, and that was that. Expect him to be among the class of the country next year, he’s got it

Bama shows 0 but spins to 2-invert at snap. Picks up the coverage and works to his 2H answer (dig) Doesn’t get to see that route develop and look how fast that window closes. This is why QBs uncomfortable seeing at speed don’t like to throw to the middle.

From a pure receiving perspective (he’s nowhere near the blocker), the one thing that prevents him from being identical to Kittle is that Kittle does everything he does on 1.5x speed. McBride is the heir to the crown right now, but I’m afraid we’ll never replace that guy

Shanahan knew they were going to be in Cover-2 so he had this OTB-Dig combo to conflict the pole-runner (MLB). He can run deep and cut off the dig but he’d have to void the underneath middle and Purdy would just split the SAM and WLB to Tonges. Quick read and layering

2 is the best player in college football. The two motions make him responsible for the A gap in the run fit. He picks it up, comes down, and makes the play at 2 yd. An elite S is like an elite TE. Undervalued because you don't *need* elite, but as impactful as anything

Upon further review, Garrett Nussmeier was much less bad than I had thought initially Saturday. The bigger problem was that he never had anywhere to go with the ball and Alabama played a great game of coverage. Because LSU can't run, they kept both Safeties free and it became impossible to figure out what coverage they'd be in both pre and post-snap. Here Nussmeier sees the corner turn to match the post like he's playing Cover-3, but he falls off after the ball is in the air as they shift late into 2-Roll (Cover-2 variation). Can't blame Nussmeier for this one, it looked open, but it's so much easier to play coverage when you don't need one of the Safeties in immediate run support.

Nussmeier sends the back in motion, checks into a screen, gets them to check, sends the TE in motion to declare Cover-0 (SS goes), flips the back to pick up the extra rusher to that side. Had a good look for this screen. Totally undressed the disguise, lost art

Slowing this down like All 22 Lyonel's fault. He just stood there while Maeker engaged Baelor after turning attention away from him despite standing there with a sword.

Completely baffled by the praise Caleb Williams is getting for that one throw. Johnson drew up the perfect coverage beater and got the primary wide open if Williams could just stay in structure when it's not perfect for him. Kinds of plays that make an OC rip their hair out...

I think it's now smart to buy low on Arch. Texas' OL is inoperable, and while the heat is affecting his accuracy in a major way, Arch is already managing difficult pockets at a high level and is still very inexperienced. He's not Texas' problem.

Venables will draw up some of the weirdest coverages that somehow make sense. Here you have a cloud and deep half to the strongside like 2 or 6, the middle S playing the post like 3, and the WS robbing like 2-steal. It's almost like a 3-cloud steal? Amazing, never seen it

Ever since Ja'Marr Chase developed a bag and the feel for zones underneath in the middle, he's basically been the perfect WR. His short strides and compact hips make him really, really good as a slot zone beater. We know what he is as a pure X, but he's the best at everything

I think the craziest thing about this play is that Jeremiah Smith actually did his job. He got to the outside of the defender to get between him and the bubble. You block him from getting to the ballcarrier, not the BALL. Nobody just jumps a bubble like this, what a play

Burrow has always been this guy, but a lot of his best throws don't get counted as big-time throws because of the distance bias it has. He'll put these figures up if defenses allow them to throw vertically which they have a bit more for some reason this year. These are "risky" throws he makes frequently at a high degree of difficulty that fit the spirit of this, but likely don't count as BTT.
