I was visiting Goa with my wife a couple of years ago. We were in this cosy little resort in South Goa right on Agonda beach, run by a middle aged Goanese couple. We had stayed there for three days and on the 4th day we drove to North Goa, walked into a bar and got drunk and so had to check in at a different hotel for the night. At 11:30 ish, the lady from the resort called us to check if we were okay and that she had waited up to see if we would return. I thanked her and assured her that everything is okay. I don’t think I have or will experience this anywhere else, and I am a fairly well traveled person. India, with all its follies, can sometimes give you the most heartwarming experiences. This was the view from our room at the resort.

I have been to the US three times and every time I have felt a sense of boundless freedom. There is something liberating about being able to get into your car, put on music, and drive off into the distance. This 👇 was in California.

Most people dream of visiting Iceland once in their lifetimes. I have been lucky enough to visit multiple times, and this is probably my 6th time here. Iceland is an odd place. It is geologically still very young, only about 15 million years old. It kind of resembles planet Earth 2-3 billion years ago, when volcanic rock dominated the surface, long before forests and animals existed. This is because it sits directly atop two tectonic plates pulling apart and the land is continually reshaped by emerging lava. So, most of Iceland is covered by moss, which is the among the first forms of life that can colonize harsh volcanic rock without any real layer of soil. It really really feels like an alien planet and maybe that is why I make an annual pilgrimage to this island almost every December. I landed here today and like every other time, I can’t help but feel awestruck by the unbounded vastness once you hit the road.

a lot of my european friends often ask what is india “really” like? here is a video i took from the metro in bangalore as it pulled up into a station this is probably one of the better parts of india- middle class urban sprawl, shiny new-ish metro station the urban sprawl reminds of parts of greece / italy, at the ground level things can be much better obviously - cleaner streets, better roads and footpaths at 10,000 GDP/capita we can aesthetically get close to southern europe

Berlin is typically dark, sad and depressing. But not today. Because today is bright and brilliant, the Sun is out and a light breeze is gently moving through the trees. This is really as good as it gets. Those of you who live with an abundance of sunshine would fortunately never quite know this feeling. On days like these life and everything around it feels significantly more optimistic.

There is a certain primordial beauty about Iceland. Which is why I keep going back. It seems like a place far removed from the noise of humanity. It isn’t really though. But in bits and pieces it does make you feel like you are in an alien world. It puts things in perspective. It reminds you that nature doesn’t care about the sordid affairs of humanity. It doesn’t care about our frail egos, our arrogant aspirations and our futile attempts to truly master nature. When I was in school, we had this physics textbook by Resnick & Haliday. In the end there was this quote: “The study of astrophysics is a truly humbling experience, it teaches us how insignificant we are in the grand scheme of things”. I found this very useful in different contexts in my life. Here is a video of Iceland with its majestic skies and rough mountains. There isn’t much going on, but that is kind of the point of it. And in the background is Anoushka Shankar.
