Irish Taoiseach (Prime Minister) says he believes it is not the responsibility of the state to look after people living with disabilities. In what can only be described as comments made by a man adrift from the realities of life for many carers, Varadkar went on to talk about his own willingness to care for family members into the future. He appeared not to realise the disparity between his own quality of life and means, and those of Carers who cannot work due to their caring responsibilities, many living below the poverty line and unable to afford proper care assistance and respite. Equally, Varadkar has not had to provide personal care for a seriously Ill or disabled relative according to this interview but expresses a confident view of himself into the future as a care provider, a fact that can only frustrate already frustrated carers around the country. As clarification, the Taoiseach did also say that where a person has no family or has high needs, the state may step in. This conditionality does suggest that disabled people with family must depend on them. Equally, there is an inference that where a person has high needs, the state will step in. This is not the experience of many carers in Ireland.

Deputy Catherine Connolly says she agrees with Mattie McGrath that too much time has been spent in the Dáil talking about RTE and no time spent discussing “15-, 16- and 17-year-olds are being collected in taxis and subjected to sexual abuse in hotels” that were taken into state care by Tusla - Child and Family Agency

He criticised the absence of the Minister for Health in the Dáil Chamber to respond to the plight of whistleblowers who, despite presenting peer-reviewed evidence and FOI documents, are ignored, discredited, and left vulnerable. Deputy McGrath referred specifically to a whistleblower who alleged regulatory failures, including misuse of end-of-life protocols in nursing homes during Covid and the failure of agencies like the HPRA HPRA and @ to act on vaccine safety concerns. He called for an immediate independent inquiry, demanding that the Department of Health, HPRA, and Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI )respond transparently and that whistleblower protections be enforced. In response, Minister of State Kieran O’Donnell TD for Limerick City Constituency , speaking on behalf of Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill TD , gave a procedural reply. He outlined the existing protected disclosures framework and the Department’s encouragement of staff to report wrongdoing without fear of penalisation. Minister O’Donnell assured that reports forwarded to the Protected Disclosures Commissioner are handled confidentially and fairly, but he did not address Deputy McGrath’s specific allegations or commit to an independent inquiry. In his rebuttal, Deputy McGrath reiterated the urgency and gravity of the whistleblower’s claims, including possible loss of thousands of lives, regulatory inaction, and systemic cover-ups. He again pressed for a public inquiry and immediate ministerial action. In closing, Minister O’Donnell reiterated the Department’s general commitment to the protected disclosures process but made no new commitments beyond referring the matter back to the Minister for Health.
