🇺🇦🇺🇳 At the UN General Assembly, Ukraine’s Deputy Foreign Minister Mariana Betsa said that hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian children remain under temporary Russian occupation or control, while Russia continues to forcibly deport, transfer, militarise and assimilate Ukrainian children. Mariana Betsa stressed that more than 20,000 cases of the illegal deportation and forced transfer of Ukrainian children have been documented, while only 2,525 children have been returned. She condemned Russia’s policy of using education and indoctrination to erase their Ukrainian identity, language and history. The international community must increase pressure on Russia and take concrete action. We continue working until every Ukrainian child is brought home. #BringKidsBack

Yevhen Malik, a defender of Mariupol, was held in Russian captivity for 2.5 years. He recalls the constant beating on any pretext the prison officers could come up with, like a "misplaced glance". The Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets, reported that Russia uses 695 different forms of torture against Ukrainian prisoners of war. This is not an isolated case, but part of Russia's state system of abuse and violence.

World War II began on September 1, 1939, when Nazi Germany invaded Poland. But the road to war had already been paved by a deal between Hitler and Stalin. The Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact divided Eastern Europe into Nazi Germany’s and the Soviet Union’s spheres of influence – and cleared the way for both regimes to act. Days later, Poland was attacked from the west and, on September 17, from the east by the Soviet Union. On the anniversary of the start of World War II, remember the full story – including the Hitler–Stalin conspiracy that made the war possible.

🇺🇦🇺🇳 At the United Nations General Assembly, Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mariana Betsa stressed Russia continues to pursue war rather than peace, using terror and repression. Mariana Betsa underscored that in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, Russia is persecuting Ukrainians for their views, carrying out arbitrary detentions and forced disappearances, while using education to impose Russian identity on Ukrainian children. She called for stronger international pressure on Moscow and continued support for Ukraine, stressing that an immediate ceasefire must be the first step towards a just and lasting peace.

Remembering those who gave their lives for Ukraine is part of our lives. Today is the Day of Remembrance for Ukraine’s fallen defenders – a day that reminds us of the huge price of freedom. But remembrance lives through many more ways – in the way we speak their names, honour them in our cities, and pass their stories on to others. We remember. And we will never forget.

For generations, Ukrainians have shared a dream of a free and peaceful future in an independent Ukraine – a dream shaped by our common past and carried forward by many courageous people. It came to life on 24 August 1991. Today, millions of Ukrainians have a shared dream too – and we turn it into action every day. Defending our country, rebuilding what was destroyed, caring for one another, and shaping the future with innovations. And we will succeed 🇺🇦 #StandWithUkraine

This is who Russia chooses to target. Not a military position. A civilian at work. In Ukraine’s Kherson, a Russian drone deliberately hunted down an ordinary market vendor. The attack left the 52-year-old man with injuries and a concussion. This is a deliberate campaign of terror against innocent civilians. The world must not accept this as normal. Stronger pressure on Russia is needed right now. These crimes must not go unanswered.

In March 2022, Russia dropped an aerial bomb on the Mariupol Drama Theater, where hundreds of people were sheltering – children among them. It deliberately turned this place into a mass grave, committing a blatant war crime. The word “CHILDREN” was written in front of the theater to make it unmistakably clear that civilians – including the youngest residents of Mariupol – were hiding inside from Russia's attack. For Russia, this became not a reason to stop, but another reason to strike. December 2025 – three years later – Russia is hosting festive events to mark the so-called “reopening” of the theater, at the very site where Mariupol’s civilians were killed, accompanied by dances, concerts, and celebrations. This is deliberate terror and a deliberate attempt to evade responsibility. Russia must be held accountable for taking the lives of innocent people and for committing genocide against the Ukrainian people.

Today is the 1,500th day since Russia launched its full-scale war against Ukraine. What Moscow expected to be a quick victory has turned into a long and costly failure. Instead of achieving its goals, Russia has only deepened its losses and isolation. The world has seen what Russia truly is: a terrorist state. The only answer to this is unity, sustained pressure, and continued defence support for Ukraine.

The world knows this unforgettable melody and sings it in numerous languages. “Shchedryk” (Carol of the Bells), inspired by a Ukrainian folk carol, became a global symbol of Christmas. It was composed by Ukrainian Mykola Leontovych, born on this day in 1877. Leontovych was a teacher, composer, and choir conductor who dedicated his life to recording and revitalising Ukrainian folk songs. His music carries a special kind of magic: no matter the language, the melody resonates with joy, hope, and the spirit of celebration. Leontovych was tragically killed in 1921 by Soviet secret police for defending Ukrainian culture. But his legacy lives on, and "Shchedryk" continues to unite people around the world.

11-year-old Roman Oleksiv, who survived the Russian missile attack on Vinnytsia, spoke at the European Parliament during a documentary screening about Ukrainian children. He shared the story of losing his mother in the attack. The boy survived severe burns through 36 surgeries and long rehabilitation. His story moved the translator to tears as she interpreted his words for the audience. Despite everything, Roman continues to study, dance, and make music, inspiring others with his message: “Never give up. Together, we are strong.”

What Ukrainians are enduring as a result of Russia’s attacks on our energy infrastructure is horrific. No child, no elderly person, no one anywhere in the world should have to go through this and spend winter days without heat, water, or electricity. Russia is deliberately waging energy terror against the civilian population. Only united action by the international community can stop Russia. #WarmthForUkraine We are grateful to all countries, organisations, and people all over the world providing energy support to Ukraine. We call on our partners to increase pressure on Russia – so that the aggressor state is unable to intensify or expand its terror.

Twice within hours, Russia struck civilian buses in Zaporizhzhia. Three people were killed, while over 10 passengers, including children, were injured. These were ordinary people travelling through the city when Russia deliberately targeted civilian transport. Today, Russia also launched a missile strike on Dnipro, attacked Kharkiv with guided aerial bombs, struck emergency responders in Nikopol, and hit the Sumy, Odesa, Chernihiv, and Kherson regions. In Kharkiv, one person was killed and at least 12 were injured after Russian guided bombs hit a civilian enterprise, damaging a tram and railway tracks. These attacks are part of Russia’s systematic campaign of terror against Ukrainian civilians. Every additional air defence system and every interceptor missile delivered to Ukraine means more lives protected. Strengthening Ukraine’s air defence is one of the fastest and most effective ways to save civilians from Russia’s terror.
