Cea Weaver says the quiet part out loud.... "We decided that fighting for rent control was a strategic and critical first step in the fight for full social housing... We decided that through a program like rent control, we are able to directly challenge the logic of unfettered profit in the real estate market. We are able to directly challenge housing as a wealth-building tool and, through regulation, strike a blow to the entire real estate industry at once. The beauty of rent stabilization and rent control is that it weakens the speculative value of the real estate asset. The value is no longer based on what the landlord is able to get, but rather it’s based on a state public board deciding how much rent is going up. And yes, that board is controlled by the real estate industry, and yes, there could be a better way to regulate it. But the idea is that we could weaken the entire industry at once through a strong rent control campaign, and that would strengthen our ability to fight for social housing.” Serious question: How is this constitutional?

"It offers an opportunity to take those existing programs and sort of supercharge them, so that we can... you know, take over a lot of distressed housing." "... there’s all sorts of things that organized tenants can do to drive down that market price, especially if, you know, we have strong rent controls."

Cea Weaver on rent-stabilized tenants as a voter block: "So like you said, there are about 2.4 million people who live in rent-stabilized apartments in New York City. And, you know, tenants really could be a difference maker in this mayoral election... Rent-stabilized tenants are a multiracial, multi-generational block of voters. They are not, we're not just talking about, you know, progressive young people. We're not just talking about people who are already politicized. We're talking about a potentially enormous working class voter block who are with us, because right now they're being forced to choose between childcare or groceries or healthcare, staying in New York at all. Right? Um, so the importance of a rent freeze is not just about the rent, it's also about bringing working class people back, um, into it's civic, civic engagement."

Cea Weaver on rent stabilization: " I think rent stabilization and, and rent freeze are just... such an important way to interrupt that cycle of speculation, displacement, and rising rents across the whole entire city. It is the way that we can tell, um, we can tell an entire class of real estate owners that this building is more important as a home than it is to, you know, lining your pocketbooks."
