Trump sued his own government for $10 billion. Today he settled with the DOJ he runs and cut the judge out of the process. The deal: a $1.8 billion taxpayer-funded slush fund his Attorney General controls, with no court oversight and no transparency. It’s the most corrupt scheme of his presidency.

Trump’s sons just signed a weapons deal with the Air Force during a war Congress never authorized. Amazon paid $40 million for a Melania documentary, then won a $581 million no-bid Pentagon contract. The corruption is not hidden anymore. It is the business model. November cannot come fast enough.

DHS spent over $1 billion buying 11 warehouses for ICE detention. They paid 11 to 13 percent above market across the board. In Salt Lake City, $145 million for a building appraised at $97 million. Many cannot even flush a toilet. The IG is now investigating allegations that Corey Lewandowski tried to extract personal payments from contractors. This is what real corruption looks like.

ICE let us walk through the doors of the Otay Mesa Detention Center on Monday. Then they handed us a memo telling us we were not allowed to talk to anyone held inside. The memo, signed that same day by the Acting ICE Director, says members of Congress must now identify detainees by name and obtain signed consent two days in advance before speaking with a single one of them. Federal law gives us clear authority to inspect these facilities at will. We already had to sue in federal court just to get in the door. Now there is a new barrier, invented this week, to make sure we never hear from the people actually being detained. If everyone inside is being treated lawfully and with humanity, what exactly is the administration trying to hide?

Can you imagine if Obama had hosted a cage fight on the South Lawn of the White House. On his own birthday. With 1,000 tickets handed to himself. While Republican lobbyists begged for the leftovers. Fox would have run a 24-hour countdown clock to impeachment. Trump is doing it June 14. And the people who called Obama undignified for putting his feet on the desk have nothing to say.

President Biden has been an outstanding leader, not only of our nation, but the entire world. I have deep respect for his decades of public service and incredible appreciation for the work we’ve done together. But I believe the time has come for President Biden to pass the torch.

10,000 veterans recently lost their homes. 90,000 more are next. Trump says he can’t afford to save them. But he has no problem spending money for a White House ballroom. You don’t get to salute the flag while throwing veterans into the street to pay for your chandeliers.

Listen to Trump’s own words regarding who is responsible for a government shutdown: “Problems start from the top and they have to get solved from the top.” “The president is the leader, and he’s got to get everybody in a room and he’s got to lead.” “I really think the pressure is on the president.” He is now refusing to meet with us, refusing to negotiate, refusing to solve anything at all. He is demonstrating the exact opposite of leadership. This is on him.

Gladys and Nelson Gonzalez lived in our community for 35 years. They paid taxes, raised a family, followed every rule—and were deported anyway. They did everything right and were failed by a broken system, made worse by the current administration’s cruelty. This is indefensible.

Today, I’m remembering the courage of John McCain when he voted to protect the ACA and keep millions of Americans from losing insurance. Protecting and strengthening healthcare for the American people should be something both parties can agree on, and I won’t stop fighting for it.
